Alright, so I've been having problems with Vista recently. After a day or so (sometimes quite a bit sooner, say a couple hours), I can no longer surf the web. My browsers lock up (I use either Opera or Firefox), and whichever Brower I'm currently using goes unresponsive and I can't even manually end it via the Task Manager. So, I restart my computer and all I get is a black screen. I manually turn it off and then back on and go through that system recovery business, only to have the same thing happen again. I've created logs using hijack this, combofix, root repeal and super anti spyware, but I've never had much in the way of know-how on technical aspects of my PC.

Wondering about possible suggestions or ideas for fixing. Should I risk connecting my PC to the internet to attach the log files for you helpful people to look at?

Are there any steps I could take/attempt on my own?

Malware may not be the cause of your problems, but by you attaching the requested logs we can certainly see if it *is* the cause or not. I require logs from:

    • Malware Bytes
    • SUPERantispyware
    • RootRepeal
    • Combofix
    • MGTools

Alright, files to follow. Fifth will be in the next message.

    1. IMPORTANT: Did you follow step 6 of the R&R, disabling disk emulation software? I see the below in your combofix log but not in the other logs. It could be that you disabled it after the running of combofix and before using MGTools. Either way, do indeed check you have disabled disk emulation software before we continue. Let me know. :)

    2. Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Folder::
    c:\programdata\Viewpoint
    C:\Windows\D56B0E274A3E46C9B5C1D93D580C099C.TMP
    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB}]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    3. Also delete all files in the below bold folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).

    4. Now run Ccleaner. Not the registry section, simply the cleaner.

    5. Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    6. Answer my question regarding disk emulation software and let me know how the PC is behaving now after running the above. :)

I uninstalled daemon tools to avoid any problems, but when I ran combofix this last time, a message came up saying that it had detected disk emulation software and needed to temporarily disable it.

Also, when I tried running ccleaner, a message popped up stating "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." Should I just uninstall and the reinstall and run? Should I simply try a restart on the PC?

Right now, I'm assuming I should follow all the steps you've listed in order, so I won't run MGtools without first running ccleaner (unless you tell me otherwise). So for now, heres the combofix log.

Thanks for all the help :)

    Forget Ccleaner for now.

Just continue on and run MGTools, attach the log it creates into your next reply here.

    Most welcome.

Alright, restarted the PC and everything is responding normally. Ran Ccleaner.

    Here's the MGTools log.

    Good afternoon. :)

I know you said you uninstalled daemon tools, but the uninstallation probably left behind remnants which are still being detected by combofix.

I want you to run step 6 of the R&R - and use Defogger to disable it. Next...

Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop
    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter.
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -v

    • Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

I ran the TDSS program, and it came up with 0 files in all three searches and then prompted me to hit any button to continue. I did so and it closed. I searched for a log, but didn't find one. I did find a Daemon Tools Toolbar still installed and removed it, so I'm thinking (and hoping) that was the last of the emulation software on my machine.

Yes but did you actually do as I instructed and follow step 6 of the R&R? I see no evidence of defogger in your newest logs. This is critical that you do this. Let me know please.

Wow, I completely blanked on that step. Sorry about that. So I ran Defogger and then did the other steps again. The TDSS program still came up with all zeroes.

But I finally found the log and so attached are the TDSS log and the new MGlog.

Those logs look good to me now. :)

Delete all files in the below bold folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).

Tell me how the machine is behaving now please.

My PC seems to be running better now. I'll have to wait and see if it suddenly stops working, but so far so good. Thanks again.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

As I was uninstalling combofix, ZoneAlarm popped up with a message stating that "PEV.cfxxe is trying to access the internet."

I had Zone Alarm block it for now. Is this normal? Is this a virus/trojan?

Just a false positive. Not malware. Nothing to worry about :)
