Vista problems

Just recently my toshiba laptop with vista home basic has trouble starting up,when i power up it just builds continually but won't get to the desktop screen,I usually have to shut it down and try again and then it usually works.this wastes alot of time,what might cause it?

Maybe a corrupt user profile.

Recently my son and I worked on a pc where if you created a new user account and tried to login to it, an error message "User Profile Service failed" would appear and we couldn't login. Also, when we logged out of an existing account, Windows would automatically login to the default user account instead of displaying the welcome screen.

We logged in with an administrator account and went My Computer/C: drive (right click properties) /Security tab/Advanced button/Change Permissions button.
Add a checkmark to Replace all child object permissions with inheritible permissions from this object.
Click ok, yes, yes and Continue on errors.
Reboot

Once we did this, the problems cleared. However, we received the recycle bin is corrupted error message. We clicked Yes and all was well.

If the fix above doesn't work, create a new user account to see if it duplicates the problem.

You could also try a System Restore.

Another thing to try is to get booted up and then do a system restore to a date prior to the problems.

If uncertain how to perform just type "system restore" into the search box under the start or windows button.
