I am not sure but I thought that I saw something on tv that microsoft has had many compaints about vista and they are working on a new program to replace it.

I wonder if this is correct?

    thanks

Microsoft has complaints about every operating system they market, and they've sold quite a few. The more miles you drive in your automobile, the better chance of you getting a ticket I imagine. I believe you are speaking of Windows 7. Looks and acts something like Vista, but this time Microsoft is really ironing out the kinks before hand by letting anyone willing to download and install the Beta or Release Candidate to do so, and offer suggestions, report problems. Vista has matured quite a bit since its release, so much so that even I am using it on occasion, and have reinstalled it on a few machines, after going to Linux, and then Beta testing Windows 7. Still prefer GNU/Linux to XP and Vista, but as finances permit, my next machine (desktop) will come with Windows 7 installed.:)

Really ... which OS suits you is a question of what type of user you are ... XP is like a girlfriend or wife that is very open to suggestion or very willing to try new things ... Vista is like a girlfriend or wife who's a control freak. XP is very mouldable, you can usually make it do what you want how you want and when you want ... Vista takes alot of that away from you ... XP is the faster more compatible OS Vista is the more Visually Appearing, safer OS. XP Pro is still the more preferred to alot of power users and businesses, because of it's compatibility and mouldability ... Vista is preferable to beginners.

Microsoft's main problem with Vista was that they brought it out too fast, without allowing time to iron our the crinkles and creases and allowing time for software and hardware vendors to catch on and make compatible HW and SW ... therefore Vista was very incompatible ... Also the compatibility mode doesn't work half as good as it did in XP ... most SW is not compatible with the new Driver Service that powers Windows Aero.

Another large problem with the early Vista systems is they were brought out with only 1GB of RAM ... now, shortly after booting, with no background third party apps running Vista uses 994MB of RAM, making it extremely slow on early systems. Although Windows Aero and Windows Sidebar make Vista very visually appealing and add useful Gadgets, they take alot of system resources, effectively making the system slower ...

Windows 7 is being brought out much more slowly so both Microsoft and 3rd Party Vendors have time to iron out the creases and make compatible HW and SW.

    Hi Java

Vista had complaints and more so as the internet is more popular now with more users than when XP was released as an upgrade to WinME, XP still gained many complaints in the compatability and resource hogging stakes as Vista did in its early days. Any OS can be tailored to a users preference and Vista/XP are similar in that respect, Vista in its RTM form was if your hardware was compatible (as in drivers) is much more stable than XP was in RTM form, I have not had to re-install Vista since Nov 2006 on one PC of mine, couldnt say same for XP RTM.

Yes it needs better and more powerful hardware but then each new OS release kinda does anyway, more so now as moores law is zipping along, and Windows 7 will likely be a prefered option as many users now have hardware thats compatible with Vista, and in being so will likely be Win7 compat too. I have an old Compaq (5yrs old) that came with XP, runs Vista well even with just 1GB ram, the main trick is getting rid of the junk that OEMs load a PC with that suck up ram.

XP is a great OS, and favoured by many corporates, but many corporates dont like change.

Would have to disagree with that as I was on the techbeta for the Vista test (likewise with Win7 now) and it was a long process held up in the main by an anti-trust issue, the migration from Longhorn into Vista and the fact that the 3rd party developers of hardware and software where slow to develop their drivers and apps for this OS it was a near 5yr+ project (was originally scheduled for 2003 release), which gave many developers time to jump onboard.

Its now these same 3rd parties that developed hardware for Vista that didnt develop drivers for this hardware to be XP compatible, so those wanting a downgrade from Vista to XP find it hard in most cases to get compatability in drivers. In Win7 MSFT have tried very hard to nudge hardware makers to get onboard quicker, but from personal emails to a few companies I know folks at they will not start new development of drivers and software for full compatability until the RTM of Win7, that in my opinion is way way too late.... the main culprits in Vista where security software companies.

Like most Windows OSes they are pre-designed and next version runs parallel to latter part of current developed one, as in the making will be Windows 8 now in design stages.

Windows 7 is a quick turnaround project and from late alpha version (PDC) to the RC is only been 6mths with a estimated RTM in Oct 09, the techbeta testers have not had the length of time to weed out bugs in this version like they did in Vista, but that said Windows 7 is a pretty well rounded OS so far and while it has bugs, only showstoppers are being sort in the RC release, I dont see a RC2 coming but next milestone will be RTM in a few months as a guess. Many seasoned techbeta testers are wanting a slowdown to releases and maybe a RC2, but I dont see that happening as this OS will be released for Xmas 09, but thankfully for me on the three PCs of various ages its working fine, minor bugs now in the RC but those will be fixed in SP1 or with the Monthly Hotfixes.

Reason for Windows 7 being more compatible with more hardware and software is its based off Vista so with Vista being 3yrs old the devs have had time to mature drivers and software so compatability is assured as Vista drivers and software in the main work in Win7 ok... alot of focus in the techbeta has been on app/hardware compatability and making sure if it worked in Vista it works in Win7.

If buying a new PC soon I would likely as I have done urge friends etc to wait for Win7, while Vista is a great OOBE on decient hardware, Win7 is better and addresses what most users hate about Vista UAC involvement, its hardly noticable in Win7 and can be tailored anyway.
