Anybody heard anything on the full release time frame? I know it is at the RC level now so it seems like it would be getting close.

Just curious, since we have beta testers of all sorts here.............

    Hi

No final dates announced, and at this time if they were I would be bound by a Microsoft NDA, but the proposed time is wide in Q1/Q2 2008 but I would guess more at Q2.

This is early RC, its when it hits RC2 ( if they release one that its near final )

As soon as I hear anything I can post on a release date for SP1, I will let you know, or post a thread on the forum as a heads up.

You trying the beta RCs at all?
Just curious if you are, then how you compair it to the RTM?

Thanks! I have been seeing more and more conversations on it so thought I would ask where a reliable answer was most likely. :major

    No, no betas for me.

I have looked at the RTM a few times but haven't tried it. Others I chat with basically rave over the improvements it gives. I will probably look at it again now.

    Thanks again.

    HI Evil

Yes SP1 RC does give quite a few speed updates and stability in many areas to Vista, but it also give a few more bugs back at present for some, for me its fine and no major issues as yet!

However good decision on not going with the beta RCs as many will not have read the full install instructions to this, there is a nice catch in that once any further RCs are released you will have to uninstall the previous RC, there is no rollup and this means also that once the final SP1 is released any using the final RC will again need to uninstall the RC before installing the full SP1.

So in the general life cycle of betas, there could be at least another 4 private test betas and two public* ones ( *depends on how many they deem necassary ), in which you will need to uninstall the RC to move to the next, then with the final release, means you will be uninstalling re-installing the Service Pack at least 2-4 times.

I added some Bold bits that are the warnings, they made them twice and the red highlighted bit.

    HI Evil

Don't let me put you off testing SP1, as testing software is a great way of learning how it works, for instance if you hit a glitch, you then get troubleshooting it to find work around, ok maybe easier for me to do as I have access to the private NGs on MS Connect and can feedback directly to the devs but its still a great learning process.

Just need in reality a spare PC that can be wiped and re-installed if the beta breaks.

But sadly many jumping onto this public beta, do not know the pitfalls as outligned above,

No worries Halo, I know you, Adrynalyn and a few others technical levels are far above the average computer user.

I may try out a beta of something along the lines of a paint or media player type programs. But the OS betas I stay far away from.

As you stated, I wouldn't know what to do if something was to go wrong.

    Thanks for the heads up,

    HI

No problems, and I hear you on trying out the smaller type apps over a full OS, and to this why not join Microsoft Connect and if a beta pops up you like th esound of apply for testing of it, great way to get involved and shape the way the application takes.

Nothing major is listed at present, but should be a few coming along soon as in new Office, MSN Messenger 9, IE8, plus also Games testing as Microsoft have a Games dept, so worth registering interest for those ( PC or Xbox ), you never know what you may gane from testing these apps ;)

Just to let you know, this is not the final release of Vistas SP1.

EDIT: I agree with Halo, testing BETAS is a great experience providing you have a test machine. Many people just install these BETAS without knowing the true dangers it can bring to your computer.

Spot on Halo, you may get something in return :p

    Regards Jason :)
