Vista to XP SP3 Audio Not Working

    I changed the operating system on my Inspiron 1501 from Vista to XP SP3. My audio and DVD player won't work. The IDT High Definition Audio Codec error message says "device can't start".

    I have tried uninstalling the device and re-installing, but it still won't start.

    Any ideas?

    Hi

    Also check in Services that the Windows Audio Service is Started and set to Automatic, it is also possible that you may need to run the below as while SP3 comes with the UAA driver built in, you may have a glitch in that driver, that needs it re-installed, here come the pitfall, in having SP3 the driver wont install as it knows it already is, so you will need to trick Windows into thinking it as SP2

    I followed Halo's instructions.........but my laptop still doesn't run the Sigmatel device. The error message is cannot start this device????

    I re-installed the sigmatel driver and now the cd player works but the DVD still says it doesn't have a decoder??

    that's a different problem all together. windows xp doesn't come with a dvd decoder, unless you have the media center version. you will need to install either dvd player software that includes the proper decoder (like power dvd or cyber dvd or some others) or a codec that is included with a codec pack (like cccp codec pack, or klite)

    i think you can install vlc media player, but i believe you will only be able to play dvds from vlc, and not windows media player.
