    Hello my geeky friends,

I have vista basic on my emachine E625 laptop machine. Last night it started going wild. I think it was after I installed fences and rebooted.

I am the Administrator and even when I right click a file and "run as Administrator" it won't run I get a message like the one I uploaded.

I can not turn UAC on or off either. When I go to User Accounts and click on turn UAC off, windows asks for permission, and then it does nothing. I can not run cmd as administrator so I can not run sfc /scannow. I tried downloading windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x86.msu which is windows installer 4.5 but it will not install. When I right click to run as Administrator the option is not included.

Even programs that windows asks if I want to run them and I click yes, the program still does not run.

I tried TweakUAC as you can see from the picture. I tried to run ccleaner, and Glary Utilities, AdvancedSystem Care, Malwarebytes, I get the same message from them all.

I also cannot install nor delete programs. It requests permission to allow that action and when I press allow the program, I get a message that says: The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation.

I think that vista is corrupt, but how do I fix it?

    Help!!!

If this happened after installing a particular program, can you restore the system to a previous state? Uninstall the program using either the windows or Revo, a program you can find here? Any better access in safe mode?

I too have had issues similar to this with Vista and for me the system restore took care of it.

    Hello brandypeppy,

Thanks for your reply. I tried do to what you suggested. Restore says there aren't any backups to restore, [which is not true,] and Windows says it can not open Revo.

    So I am still stuck!

Do I need to save my data and do a clean reinstall?

Before going to the extreme of doing a clean install, have you considered contacting either Microsoft, Acer, and/or Stardock (especially Stardock) to see what help they can give you?

I would certainly agree with imperfect on contacting one or all of those companies. I've never seen a system that I couldn't use Revo on. You might even try going to the malware forum and running through the "Read and Run Me First" sticky, you could possibly have some malware issues.

    Hi, Pete22

I wouldn't rule out an infection by one of the variants of the latest round of rogue anti-virus applications - such as AntiSpy Protector 2009 / Windows Antivirus Pro / Windows PolicePro / etc.. Have you ran any online scanners, such as these two?

    Hello dr.moriarty,

I have been a fan of Majorgeeks for a while and your guides warned me not to install those rogue security programs. [Thank You]

I have two of these laptops and the first one became unstable last month and I finally had to downgrade it to XP. Last night, I got frustrated and downgraded this laptop to windows XP also.

Yes, it could have have been a virus. Those online scanners are a great idea to use when programs on a computer will not run. I will make a link to those sites and will use them in the future.

Thank you for the new tip.

    Cheers
