Vista - Windows DVD Maker Burn Errors

I have a Toshiba Qosmio G35-AV600 and I am running Windows Vista Service Pack 1.

The problem I am having is that every time I try to burn a movie to a DVD using Windows DVD Maker I keep getting an error at about 79.1% complete or 81.2% complete. It happens every time I try to burn a movie to DVD no matter the size of the movie. The first couple of times I tried I got the following error:

Burn Error - An Error has occurred in burning to CD/DVD.

The next error message that I can consistently recreate is as follows:

Windows DVD Maker cannot finish burning the project using this disc because an error occurred when writing to disc. Please insert another blank or rewritable disc, then try again.

In Event Viewer it says Vista CDROM Event ID 133 but I have not been able to find out any information on it.

After reading through some of the major forums, it seems that many, many people are having the same problem with Vista but no one seems to know how to fix it. They come up with the conclusion that it must be a video codec conflict but I'm not so sure that is true as I have checked all of my video codecs and there is not any unusual codec installed. It does not appear to be a device conflict either as I have no conflicts.

This same problem occurs not only with Windows DVD Maker but also happens when trying to burn a disc in Windows Movie Maker or Windows Media Player.

Any help or information at all that you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Elizabeth

Don't use the windows movie maker program. Find a trial of another software and see if that works. You may have to spend some $$$ but then you won't have useless DVDs that you need to trash.
Search before you trial something to see what software people seem to be having success with in Vista.

Yes, I kind of figured that it was the Windows Vista program that was causing the problem.

Can you recommend a free or low-cost program to burn movies (mostly *.avi) to dvd's?

I will then download them and try them out before buying the software, as you suggested.

    Thanks for the help!

Sorry, I don't run XP or Vista so I'm not up to date as to what product(s) work to burn avi files.
On my 2K computers, I use a free burning proram, ImgBurn http://www.imgburn.com/
but I haven't used it to burn avi files.

If you haven't run Vista, you have no business debunking the applications within it. I have not yet made a coaster using the DVD Maker or Movie Maker.

This event ID you saw, double click it for more information, and please post it here.

Sheesh, I was just asking a question -- I'm not "debunking" the applications in Vista -- I love Vista and have been using it for quite a while. I have just recently begun downloading .avi movie files and want to burn them to DVD so I can watch them on my HDTV.

Relax friend, my comment wasn't directed towards you.

Can you verify that event occurred at the same time you were burning?

Also, what media are you using? How much ram do you have?

I don't believe Adrynalyne was referring to you... I believe he was referring to plodr's comment. :)

Hmm.. 133.. Seems like I had the same event ID when I had some trouble with burning a while back. I'm not sure that having the same event ID means you have exactly the same problem, though. I tried to look back in my event viewer and reliability monitor and didn't find it, but for some reason it really rings a bell. It was several months ago, though. I don't believe I ever actually figured out why I had such trouble burning, but I believe now that it was an overheating problem. You said that it didn't matter what size movie, but ANY movie is going to be a decent sized burn. Even in my desktop PC with plenty of airflow and cooling the drive appeared to have overheated after burning for a long period of time(I believe I was on my second dvd, attempting to do a backup). And laptops are notorious for overheating... I'm not sure if I'm on the right track or not, but that's my experience.
