Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premium, Service Pack 2, 32 bit

When I start Windows I can login and then as the desktop and toolbar is loading the computer partially freezes. I can still move the mouse cursor but cannot click on anything.

If I start in safe mode the computer loads up but I cannot connect to the internet in safe mode so cannot do much.

I've ran AVG free and it found nothing. I installed Spybot S&D but it cannot run as it needs an internet connect to update first and I cannot connect.

I think it is something in the start up when Vista reaches that point it causes the machine to lock but not sure what. Have locked at start up via msconfig and could not see anything untoward.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

Have you selected Safe mode with networking and still can't get an internet connection?

    Hi

Did you disable all startups in msconfig's Startup tab and reboot and if Windows worked ok, then enable one item at a time and reboot until you get the same issue and then that last item is likely the cause so do tell us what it was.

Also follow the below and let us see whats in your startup as something may jump out at us

I would not rule out malware as the cause as those scanners may not find everything, so a run through of the below maybe worthwhile also.

It crashes like a normal boot what I select safe mode with networking.

Only starts ok in normal safe mode.

Yes disabled all start ups, problem still persists. Even if I don't log into to Windows and leave the computer at the user login screen it crashes after a few minutes.

Will have a look at those links but not sure I can access them on the problem machine as it crashes after a minute or two.

    Thanks

    Bad NIC card perhaps?

Is there any way to test it or turn the card off? Thanks.

I can now start up in safe mode with network connection and get online in safe mode which I couldn't do before.

I ran Spybot search and destroy and removed a few things including facemoods which I think started showing up shortly before the problems started.

Are there any online tests I can run in safe mode to see what might causing my problem?

    Thanks.

I'm not sure about the NIC but I would run a chkdsk on the drive to see if there are any errors in the file system.

From safe mode, go to Computer>right click the C: drive and select Properties. Under the Tools tab select Error Checking button. Leave the first box checked and hit the Check Now button. It will schedule for next reboot. Reboot and let the test run. Note if it fixes any errors in the report. See if any difference starting in a mode other than Safe Mode.

    Hi

Thats good that you can get into Safe Mode with Networking and download and run apps, I would also as you can run the guide steps in my earlier posts last quoted text box for malware removal, be trying to see if you can run the steps and start a thread in the malware forum on this and attach the requested logs.

As while Spybot may have removed some malware some may still persist and manual intervention from our malware team maybe needed.

I've run CCleaner and attached the startup. Like I said I've turned everything off since the trouble started.

    Hi

Nothing major in your startup list apart from uTorrent in which I would run the malware read me guide and post in the malware forum your logs as earlier noted you mentioned malware and it may not all be removed. Torrents are a major pest which spread malware something ruthless.
