I'm a bit of a Vista newb, and just today I tried to burn a CD with the built in burning app... it sucks. I first tried a CDRW and Vista saw the size wrong (it was brand new, 657mb free, Vista said 577mb free) and then tried to 'format' the CDRW. After about 5 minutes, it said 'unable to complete the format'. So I put the disc in a trusty Win2000 PC and used NTI's CDMaker to erase (or 'format') the disc to make sure the disc hadn't been damaged by Vista. It was OK, and NTI saw the size correctly and all was OK. So I went back to the Vista PC with a standard, brand new CDR, 52x max. Again, Vista wanted to format the CD, which it did successfully in about 4 minutes. But then it said it would be another 5 minutes to burn the data (Nvidia drivers, the newest AutoPatcher, a small folder, and a Notepad file; about 620mb total). Just for fun, I did the same thing on an XP PC. It took about 5minutes from inserting the CD to completion, where Vista took about 10 minutes. What's up with that?

There are no specialty drivers for recordable optical drives. I bet this is an issue waiting for Vista SP1 or SP2 to fix.
