VLC as default (help)

    Can someone please tell me how to make VLC media player my default player in Windows Vista, I've tried the files by association, but don't really know what I am supposed to do, a post I read said to hold down the ctr key and highlight all the files I wanted, but it would not let me do that and anyway was not sure which files I really needed as there were so many, so can someone please give me some advice, thank you.

    Hi


    Have you tried setting VLC as default app for media and this location is where you do this Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs and if VLC shows in the list choose it and set it at full defaults.

    Then/or on any Video files or media files you wish VLC to open righ click them and choose Open With > then click Choose Default Program > then if VLC is not in the list Browse for its exe file (will likely be in Program Files folder at this location C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC and look for the cone icon named vlc) and click it, and click Open then tick the Always use the selected program to open this type of file > OK

    Then open a video file, it should have a vlc cone icon as just tried this now to test.

    Thank you, that did the trick, just wondering, why is it VLC and other programs don't show up as a choice in "set your default programs" and cannot be accessed from there or placed into that particular window.

    Glad that worked for you :)

    Sadly some applications dont follow the set convention that MSFT sets out and cut corners to integration to Windows, so dont show up in that list, but the workaround as I posted does work as you found out,

    It would be great if everthing could be tailored for our personal preference but maybe in the next Windows version, but still need developers to follow guidelines.
