VLC player causes PC to freeze

I play alot of .flv files and my player of choice is VLC Media Player. I understand you can configure WMP to play them too however I have read about a few problems with doing so. I have used VLC successfully for a long long time now but my PC has took to freezing up completely now whenever I open VLC player itself or files associated with it. Same old thing... a short pause....then my mouse quits functioning.. task manager will not crop up... nothing will respond, so nothing for it but hitting the reset button on the tower and rebooting.

Things I have tried:

Making sure that PC Tools which can be a bit iffy at times had the executable for vlc in it's allow list which it certainly did.

Tried Disabling the FW when opening a file.. it still freezes the PC

Tried totally uninstalling the software (vlc) Ccleaner > reboot > and fresh install. To no avail.

I would rather not use an alternative... I would like to figure out what exactly is causing vlc to malfunction like this. Thanks for any thoughts!

Hey there,

Software is far from my field of expertise, but i might reccommend that you try typing "dxdiag" in the run menu. This will show a few different tabs to choose from see if you can find the one that relates to codecs or media related files. Have a look through them see if there is anything with an icon reporting an issue. this might be a starting point.

Also if you have played any online movies these may have hijacked the "open with" that windows uses and so when you select a file it trys to play it with an unsupported format...possibly. So many variants and different factors with software.

I would suggest that codecs or even temporary files could be a factor in this, but again Im far from an expert with software.. but this gives you a place to start trouble shooting.

no problems reported.

nope... no online movies.

my temp files are emptied daily.

Thankyou Rikky for the suggestion of turning off Enhanced Security Verification in PCTools.. trying again now with that disabled to open a file...

Interesting, I'll file this one away for when I install PCTools again. Seems like a very aggressive process to affect stored flv's.

I have also used Pctools in the past, hadn't heard of this one though.

Wondering what Rikky's reply to the poster? She described the exact problem i have which started just yesterday with vlc. She mentioned an enhanced security verification in pctools? If pctools is an antivirus, i haven't installed that one. Hope Rikky can repost his reply since i can't find it in this thread.

acidbag, please start a new thread. This is a 2 3/4 year old thread and the version of VLC has evolved a lot since that time.
