In what part of the installation does the error occur ?
If it is at the first reboot, can you boot in safemode ?

Btw. why are you not installing WinXP on this kind of machine ? (Driver support is so much better)

I instaled a new mobo and every thing is going smoothly ( so far ) and as far as XP it was only a celaron 366 and 64MB of ram but now its a K6-3 450 with 128MB ram so im ganna install XP after all......

Ah, I got confused by your signature, which indicated that we were talking about a machine that was a little more powerful :)

I am having the same problem on an older Compaq.
Trying to insall windows 98 I receive the Vmm23.vxd missing or unable to load.

I finally was able to get into safe mode but not sure what to do from here.

    Can anyone please help?

I had this problem 3 times while trying to install Windows 98SE on an old HP Vectura 5/120.
    Finaly... believe it or not...
It went away after I removed the instalation CD.
    Alternatively...
You could go into BIOS and make sure the first boot is the primary hard drive.
