Boy you guys in Britain and the mainland are having it rough over there from the Eyjafjallajokull volcano. Is there anyone out there who could provide phonetic spelling of this, how is it pronounced?

Are you seeing ash dust residue, or has it all remained up high? I see the English navy is getting involved to transport across the channel too.

And the finger pointing is starting too I see.

    What a MESS!!!

I heard they're lifting the ban on flying. Now is it really safe or is it because the airlines are loosing 5 billions dollars a day. I don't think I would trust them. I think I would move to where ever it was I was stranded LOL

Yeah the wrestling RAW superstars were over there and they couldn't fly back to the United States so they may not make it there tonight show. So Smackdown (thursday show superstars) will probably be most of the matches tonight.

    Hi

No on any residue or even to any of the ash, its really fine particles, so unless it decides to rain then dont think we will see much muck yet, hope not as I washed the car over the weekend.

Not seen any effects of this apart from poor air passengers stranded (collegue from dept next door is stuck on a Spanish island at present, geeez some will do anything to get out of doing work.....

Flights in Northern UK are to be lifted at 0700BST tomorrow, with rest of UK by later that day, have to say and I'm not a vulcanologist or meterologist, or a few other of the -ologists that know the science of these things BUT, while we can see the plumes of ash from the volcano on TV, its more what the fine particales can do to a jet engine, not in a few hour test flight like some carriers did (yes know they are looking after profits over the passengers in reality) BUT more so what the longer term effects will be?

Mainly to the engines as the ash contains silicates that when heated turn to glass, this if builds up in a jet engines injector could cause issues not tomorrow not next day bit months down the line, all depends on the air content of this ash cloud and sorry but the likes of the airlines are less in a possition than me to be the expert here.

This is from today, adn these where F16s
1207BST Nato fighter jets have suffered engine damage after flying through volcanic ash cloud, a senior US official has said. The official gave few details except to say that a build-up of glass was found in the jet engines.
    full story here

@Darlene is that $5bn a day US + Euro carriers as figures here are only put at around $200m a day)

While we have had ups and downs in this and some areas making a fast buck out of the misery caused, like hotels putting the prices up by 200-400%, same with car hire companies, the airlines not following the EU rules on caring for passengers stranded! but on the other side you get the French National Railways SNCF, reducing the price of tickets and adding more seats to trains from Paris to London and one of the bulk car carrying ferries (I forget for the moment the company) is laying on coaches to ferry passengers that want to return quickly that way, need to be in coaches as they are not passenger ferries.

North America isn't being excluded from this, Newfoundland has cancelled a lot of flights as the cloud is headed this way.

I read a little while ago that Sir John Cleese was stranded in Oslo, so what else to do than take a Taxi from Oslo to Brussels costing over $5000 .... good old JC, never lets a situation get out of hand :-D

    Hi Ned

Noticed that the cloud model is heading to northern Canada at present.

Some neat highres images from the NASA Modis satelite HERE (not very dialup friendly as the full images *250m* are needed for superb detail)

So I've got this mental image of you Brits wading through knee deep ash, bandanas wrapped around you mouths, googles, in perpetual twilight with the swirling ash blocking visibility to less than 50 feet.

    Is that pretty accurate?

The dad of a friend of my daughter's is stuck in Thailand and can't get a flight for another nine days. If there's one place in the world I wouldn't mind being stuck in, it's Thailand. Or Amsterdam ;) But not Sunderland. Or Grimsby. I've been to both and they're worse than Middlesbrough. Hard to believe, I know, but true :)
