The little volume control icon at the bottom of the task bar disappeared but I found it and put it back in place. How when I click on it nohing appears, I checked every thing I can find to get it restored. I hope that some one might be able to give me some advice.

How did you "put it back in its place"?

The proper method to get it to show is
    1. Click the up arrow at the end of the icons.
    2. Select Customize.
    3. Scroll down until you see the volume icon and select Show icon and notifications.

I assume you have speakers attached and they are turned on.
    This is for Windows 7.
Open Control Panel, click on sound. On the playback tab, be sure that speakers have a green checkmark.

Also check the device manager and make sure it is installed correctly - no ! on the device.
