Is it possible for someone to tell me, in layman's terms' what this is, what purpose it serves(i.e why would someone want it?) And a possible link to recommended sites,

    Thanks in advance.

A VPN allows someone to connect a remote computer to a network, and browse as if it were a part of that network.

From my experience, its a good way for companies to get people to work from home for free. :)

A google search of VPN will turn up LOTS of results. I've had good experience with the open source solution SSL-Explorer. You can find that at SourceForge.

    Okay next questions..

Does it have to be a company?

Can it be linked to someone in the UK? If so how?

Does my connection then come from the UK server?

If it was possible, who pays me or the person in the UK?

Is there any other questions, I havn't asked that need to be answered?

    Thanking you kindly

No. A VPN can be setup on any network.

Yes. Same as anywhere else. Configure a server as VPN host, and have remote machine connect to it.

I'm sorry, do you mean INTERNET connection? You CAN configure the server to allow the remote client to browse via the network's internet connection.

Pays for the bandwidth use? I believe it would be the server. I'm not certain that the ISP would distinguish between a remote client and a local client.

I don't know. Anything left that you don't understand?

    Thaks so far.

Okay to be more specific, I am in Thailand and have a broadband connection, my sister is in the UK also on broadband. I want to access the UK server and believe the VPN was the way forward.
Could you tell me, in those circumstances, the step by step process to make this happen?

I recommend that you do some research of your own. I know SSL-Explorer, for example has a nice installation guide, as well as a configuration manual. Getting someone else to lay it all out for you is going to be tricky at best. Read the manual, and you should do fine.
