VPN's and Dorm Networking...

Hey all, couple of questions... I've been at school since fall and the dorm networking is rather lame, they block certain ports (certain meaning almost all), not allowing you to play games (WoW, CS, GW), browse the web (sometimes), and its really makeing me mad. I was wondering if someone could give me some pointers on useing something to get around this. I was googleing it and I was reading about a VPN (Virtual Private Network) but I am unsure as to like how this work. I know its somewhat the same as a proxie (I would be conneting to my friends IP outside of the dorms) but was wondering if you smarties could give me some pointers, any questions/comments just lemme know I'll be watching the post. you are using windows of course. I cant really help you, because i dont deal with windows too much, other than to play games. anyway. what you need is an ssh tunnel. it will tunnel from your dorm through an unblocked port and connect to an ssh server that would handle your connections for you.

 

There are a few ways to set up VPN
Router to Router (Cisco, prefered and the hardest to set up.)

Client running VPN Client software to some type of dedicated server with VPN software installed

or

IPSec through a RAS server and a few other solutions



There are also 4 different available Protocols.
PPTP (point to point tunneling Protocol) Microsoft Proprietary and not encrypted
L2TP (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol) Cisco, and it is encrypted. Its Encapsulated Security Protocol is (IPSec)
(SSL) Secure socket layer which is growing in popularity and uses a Web Browser and is also known as a clientless solution because it does not need VPN software.

All in all, I dont think that a VPN is what you are looking for to play games but if you do get it to work I would love to here about it.
