    Hi Everyone,

    I've been having weird troubles due to the awful Vundo trojan. Last night, Windows and McAfee both detected one. I don't remember the precise name they gave it, but they both clearly said "vundo" in the title.

    One strange thing I noticed was that after the first time I rebooted, the following error message immediately popped up when Windows loaded:

    "error loading c:\progra~3\setorera\setorera.dll"
    "The specified module could not be found"

    So I figured, yeah, this is obviously connected to the trojan. Lo and behold, not a minute later Internet Explorer was popping up on its own with ads for photo blogs and virus removal.

    I went through your handy Malware Removal Guide from front to back and could run everything but ComboFix and RootRepeal, since I'm using 64 Bit Windows Vista.

    Every step detected a whole bunch of stuff. Malwarebytes said it could get rid of most everything, but there was something it could not remove (I do not know what, perhaps this shows up in the log).

    So after going through the whole procedure, disabling system restore, etc, my computer seems to be working okay...I'm not getting the pop-ups.

    However, I'm still getting that error message:

    "error loading c:\progra~3\setorera\setorera.dll"
    "The specified module could not be found"

    While my computer isn't acting super slow and there are no pop-ups, I'm still bothered by this message...it feels like not everything is taken care of, especially since Malwarebytes gave that notice about not being able to take care of everything.

    I'm attaching my logs...I sincerely hope you can make some sense of it all. Any help would be greatly appreciated...I'd hate to have to reformat everything.

    Please do the following:

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\Users\Alex\AppData\Local\Temp\1881038941.exe
    C:\Users\Alex\AppData\Local\Temp\2759144105.exe
    C:\Users\Alex\AppData\Local\Temp\3489014323.exe
    C:\Users\Alex\AppData\Local\Temp\391997224.exe

    C:\Users\Alex\AppData\Local\Temp\hsf78w3uhduf8w.tmp
    C:\Users\Alex\AppData\Local\Temp\is-S031I.tmp
    C:\Users\Alex\AppData\Local\Temp\is-S2BI1.tmp
    C:\Users\Alex\AppData\Local\Temp\is-UHNAK.tmp

    Registry::
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hi TimW,

    Thanks for the advice, but I unfortunately cannot run ComboFix on my computer as it's the 64-Bit edition of Vista. I tried running ComboFix just in case I misread the earlier instructions, but it didn't work.

    Do you think there would be any other options to try?

    Much appreciated, thank you for your quick reply.

    Crapola...I forgot. Sorry. Let's do it this way:

    Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

    Code:
    :Processes
    explorer.exe

    :Files
    C:\Users\Alex\AppData\Local\Temp\1881038941.exe
    C:\Users\Alex\AppData\Local\Temp\2759144105.exe
    C:\Users\Alex\AppData\Local\Temp\3489014323.exe
    C:\Users\Alex\AppData\Local\Temp\391997224.exe
    C:\Users\Alex\AppData\Local\Temp\4099258147.exe
    C:\Users\Alex\AppData\Local\Temp\55d99.msi
    C:\Users\Alex\AppData\Local\Temp\rgjjkm8zw4.exe
    C:\Users\Alex\AppData\Local\Temp\sdfsejf98jfsiodkfd.tmp
    C:\Users\Alex\AppData\Local\Temp\us06odf.exe

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [createrestorepoint]
    [emptytemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Push the large http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2782/4174320048_f01c448b32_o.png button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.

    Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach this log file to your next message.

    NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and attach that document back here in your next post.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\OTMLog.txt

    Hi Tim,

    Thanks for getting back to me again, and another thanks for your patience. I used OTM as instructed, and after I rebooted, I no longer seem to have the problem with the DLL error message.

    I've attached the logs, but as far as I can tell, things appear to be better!

    Thank you very much for all of your help. You've been a lifesaver.

    Much better!! :)

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners.They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to tahe cleaning procedures ian step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
      a
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
