I believe I have this Vundo virus. I've run scans from McAfee and SuperAntiSpyware and they can't help. My symton is new IE Explorer windows keep opening when I'm on the net.

I ran Vundofix.ext, however the 3 files listed reappear each time I rebot and run Vundofix.

I've also ran hijackthis, I believe I've attached both logs.

    Can someone help?

    Thanks.

Okay, I went through all the steps rather than trying the shortcut for vundo, attached are the 3 logs.

    Symptoms
    My symptoms started around 1/11/08.
Initially multiple windows internet explorer windows would open when surfing the net.
After the shortcut cleanup, just one new window would open (with a seemingly random site) each time I went to a new site. My original window would still go to the site I requested.
After going through all the steps, one additional window continues to open but it doesn't actually connect to a site, it remains blank and the connecting icon continues to revolve. My original window still goes to the site I request.
    (Popup blocker is on)

    Additional notes
Combofix took at least an hour or two to run last night (i went to bed). I couldn't find the log so I ran again this morning before going to the next steps as instructed. It ran in about 15 minutes and the log showed where expected.
Spybot showed Smitfraud-C.CoreSerive (and many other things but this seemed the most serious from what I've read).

Thanks for the help so far, please let me know what I should try next.

That's because there were more than 5000 infected files it was finding and deleting as you can see in the log. And there are still more.

Okay now we need to use a new tool.
    • Download and save to RenV.exe to your Desktop (must be on the Desktop)
    • Now Copy the bold text in the below code box to notepad. Save it as Log.txt to your desktop. (It must be on your Desktop).
    Code:
    C:\Program Files\Dot1XCfg\Dot1XCfg .exe
    C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2 .exe
    C:\Program Files\McAfee\MBK\LogOnHook .exe
    C:\Program Files\Optimum Online\Netsurf .exe
    C:\Program Files\SiteAdvisor\6172\SiteAdv .exe

    • Now using your mouse, drag Log.txt onto RenV.exe
    • When finished, RenV.exe will produce a new log names Log.txt on your Desktop I will ask for this log later.
Do you use Optimum Online Net Guide or Net Surfer? It is considered undesirable adware. If you don't use it, uninstall Optimum Online net guide

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Viewpoint Media Player (Remove Only) <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = ;127.0.0.1;;<local>

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Also delete all files in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Erik Dawes\Local Settings\Temp

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Wow, looks like everything is running ok now!

I've attached the logs as requested. Please let me know if there is anything else I should do.

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it. I would definitely recommend this site to friends. I'll have to poke around the forums now to see what routine maintanence checks I should be doing going forward.

One other question in addition to my post below. Under a seperate account I noticed I forgot to uncheck one of the hide files options as part of the Enable viewing of hidden files procedures.

When a log into this account Window IE works fine, i.e. no unwanted windows open. The only issue is a Windows warning popup shows up that says:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\dday2.exe

    "Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddayw.exe.' ......"

I ran Ccleaner under this login and I'm going to run the other 4 checks; combofix, spybot, etc.

Should I post the results of those logs under this thread if it keeps happening, start a new thread, or is there another simple step.

    Thanks again.

Since the previous user account now shows clean logs, you can post the new logs for the next user account in this thread. There could be a few things to cleanup but it will even close to what was in the first account since we removed all those global problems already.

After running combofix again in the next user account the windows error messaged stopped. The pc is running fine in all user accounts now.

    Thanks again.

    You're welcome.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix then UNINSTALL COMBOFIX (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN
      • Now type combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
      • Note: The space between the X and the /U, it must be there.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you run RenV.exe, you can delete it and the Log.txt file on your Desktop.
    9. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    10. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    11. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    12. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    13. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
