On our computer, about a month ago, our Norton's Antivirus had detected the Trojan.Vundo virus on our computer. We scanned the computer and it said it resolved (but didn't Quarantine the virus). We restarted our computer, like it instructed us to, rescanned the computer, but it still said that we had the virus. And now we have a permanet pop-up on our computer warning us of the virus. We went online, found instructions on going into Safe-Mode and running the scan, saying that it would take care of the problem. Low and behold, it didn't solve the problem.

Now our computer is running extremely slow and is acting like it is running a program all of the time. Should we reformat our computer or is there a way to get rid of the Trojan.Vundo virus? Thank you very much.

It depends on which form you really have. There have been at least three of them.

The shortest approach may be to do the below. This is a newer tool:

These steps must be run exactly as specfied.

    1) Download this Symantec Trojan.Vundo Removal Tool to a location where you can find it later
    2) Make sure you do not run anything but what is specified. DO NOT OPEN any browsers during this process below so print or save these unstructions locally so you know what to do while offline.
    3) Boot into safe mode and physically unplug your cable to the internet
    4) Run the fixvundo.exe tool downloaded above and save the log
    5) Immediately reboot in normal mode and run the fixvundo.exe tool again. Save the log.
    6) Immediately reboot again into normal mode and now reconnect your cable to the internet.
    7) Open a browser and come back here and post your logs from running fixvundo. Also tell me how these steps went. Any problems?

If the above does not work, you will have to work thru the longer procedure given in the link below.

Virtumonde aka Trojan Vundo Fix w/ Tool

We have tried that (The first set of instructions). The log always states that

Are you sure it is the same version in my link? This version did not exist a month ago.

If so, continue to the next steps.

I redownloaded the FixVundo.exe removal tool and went to Safe-Mode and ran the program. Appearantly, it worked because it is actually running like normal and we don't have that awful Warning Pop-Up from Norton's. Here is the log from the first scan.

I rebooted the computer and ran the FixVundo.exe scan again. It said that the virus wasn't found on the computer, so I'm assuming that the problem was fixed.

I would like to thank you for the help and support!

You're welcome. If you have anymore problems, you should follow our standard cleaning steps given below.

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:

    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis
