    Hi there,

Despite using AVG and Zonealarm I seem to have been affected by the same malware as others i.e. the blue background and yellow/blue warning re spyware. Since then my computer has been running very, very slowly.

I have been trying to follow your excellent guide to clean my laptop and have got to the Spybot part. Unfortunately I cannot go any further as I can't get a connection to IE now. So can't update the Spybot program. Not sure why the internet will no longer connect. Is this part of the malware? The connection is there but IE will not connect. Although Outlook will!

Hoping you can give me some help.

    Thanks

    Grantyboy

p.s this is what I have got

If you have lost your IE connection....try downloading to a different computer and use a cd or thumb drive to transfer the programs....ComboFix would be a good start.. but we need the log from running the MGTools.exe....( it would be C:\MGLogs.zip].

I am still having lots of trouble with my computer after this malware appeared.

Basically, the computer is now very slow, Outlook will hang especially with HTML messages. Things are variable and sometimes the laptop will function normally.

I have used all the clean-up tools you suggest and have attached the MGLogs.zip

I would rather not wipe the entire laptop and start again but if you think this will be the best way to go.

    Cheers Grantyboy

Your logs are basically clean...we can do a few things, but it is looking the problems you are still having may not be a malware issue.

Can you tell me what these are:

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
After clicking fix, just exit HJT.

Use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\bca4e2da.$$$"
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\fa56d7ec.$$$

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.

    * Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    * Under Main choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser

    * Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser

    * Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    * Click the Empty Selected button.
o NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

Tell me exactly what issues you still have and exactly what happens.

    Hi Tim,

Thanks so much for your advice.

Firstly, I have no idea what any of those files are. I got the laptop in 2003 so not sure why they have 2002 as the date.

Did all the things you say. Except I could not delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\bca4e2da.$$$"
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\fa56d7ec.$$$
Keeps saying another program may be using them, I have tried quiting all programs and still can't delete.

The computer is even slower. Took about 10mins to start up! Also still have the issue in Outlook, it hangs on opening any HTML message.

    Any thoughts?

    Cheers

    Then lets dump them:

download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

You may wish to use a Startup Manager

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file and the avenger log.

    Tim,

I have attached the avenger and MGtools logs for you. From the avenger file it seems that not all files were deleted.

Still slow (better than before your last post) and various applications hanging.

    Thanks

Your logs are clean.....we can do this to see if we can speed you up:

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.

Now tell me what other issues you are having.....you may need to re-install the programs that hang. But let me know.

    Good work Tim, much faster.

Remaining major issue is the hanging of Outlook on opening a html message, slows the whole system down and is irritating. I have tried repairing outlook, installing IE (I have been using Firefox). Any ideas?

    Cheers

Let's do our final steps and then you can post in the software section regarding the html files...

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

1 If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop & renamed it like we requested.)

    * Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
    * "%userprofile%\Desktop\cf" /u
o Notes: The space between the cf" and the /u, it must be there.
o This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    * Delete the C:\cf folder from combofix.
2 *If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
3 *If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    6. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
How to Protect yourself from malware!

    Thanks Tim,

That is everything done and the laptop seems to be back to its old self. I have downloaded all the precautionary measures so fingers crossed. One program not mentioned is WinPatrol, do I need this program which tells me when start-up programs are being loaded, etc.

Thanks again for all your help,

    Grantyboy

WinPatrol can be useful for monitoring the startups....most people have startup items that they don't know about and wonder why it takes so long to load the system. :)

    And you are welcome.
