Warning about the heat

As we are all painfully aware, it is ridiculously hot in the majority of the US and Canada right now. I learned a valuable lesson today that had never occurred to me, since it never gets this hot here, and certainly not for this many consecutive days.

In our garage, we have a shelf where we keep Fix-a-Flat, oil, windshield washer fluid, de-icer, etc. Yesterday one of the cans of Fix-a-Flat apparently blew up. Remember stomping on ketchup packets in high school? Same thing, but with way more stuff. The bottom of the can is roughly 15 feet from the main part, and the tube is about six feet the other direction. The splatter zone covers the entire front of the car below the windshield, as well as roughly a 4x8-foot spot on the garage floor.

If you normally store things like that in your garage, now might be a darn fine time to move them to a cooler location. The mess is bad enough to have to clean up, but there is a very real fire danger there as well.

That's kind of strange, we get over 100 here all the time and never had something like that happen (I'm talking MANY years), makes me think that container was defective. Yep, shade is your friend.

Hehe...but that wind blows the hot air around. Makes it kind of worse. But that depends if it is windy or not.

Here (Ohio), man the wind blows around hot air all the time. Shade or not, pleh! Haha :tired

100 was the official temp at the airport...my thermometer said 102. I refuse to even look at the heat index. LOL I don't have AC at my house. It hasn't been below 90 in here for almost a week. But I do spend a fair amount of time in the basement...it's only about 79 down there. Predicted high for us for tomorrow is 102.

It may have been a defective can, but we've had it for 3 years or so and it's been fine. On the other hand, it's not been this hot for this many consecutive days in almost 30 years.

Just figured I'd mention it in case it happens to someone else. ;)

Yep, it's mighty warm. We are going to get 105F/41C today, actually it will probably be a little higher than that since the weather station is in a cooler part of the area and always a few degrees off. I live about 200 yards from Lake Erie, but the wind favours the other side, although there is little more than a breeze right now. This kind of weather makes me wish I had A/C lol currently 10:30am and my living room is 96F, so yeah, it's warm :-D

Wow! I guess this is what we call roasting. It's going to be around 105 here as well.

It's hard to get cheap central air anymore. :p

I'm freezing cold, almost 24/7, and it's piddling with rain and blowing like a bugger. Still nursing pneumonia/bronchitis for the last three weeks or so - joy, oh joy!rolleyes:(

I actually have been thinking about you quite a bit the last couple of weeks, because I know you're in as much winter as I've got summer. It's no secret that I hate, abhor, detest, and loathe being cold. But this unrelenting span of 90F+ days is just way too much even for me. Last night at 3am it was 81F outside and still about 92F in my house, and it felt like a vacation. Right now, still two hours from the hottest point of the day, it is 101F outside and 96F in my house.

Stay warm, take your meds, and feel better soon!

I've had a tube of biscuits blow up in my kitchen...scared the crap out of me! And biscuit shrapnel EVERYWHERE! Ceiling, walls, everything on the countertops...yeesh. LOL

Thanks guys/gals. Yeah, I've just finished one course of antibiotics and am now onto something a lot stronger, which look like big horse pills of some kind. Getting better, but it's a long haul for me. Ribs and abs muscles as sore as Hell, a.t.m.
Am keeping as warm as possible, but g/f is moving house - and yup I'm stuck with that, too. She tried to get me to rip up and move a heap of paving bricks today, (and in my car, too rolleyes) ~ That's when the fight started.roflmao

She talks me into washing my expensive Slazenger sports jacket and gives it back to me minus the zip. Apparently, she didn't know about doing the zipper up first, before putting it in the dryer.rolleyes So she gives me her fluffy pink dressing gown to wrap up in, (yeah, gay as Hell, I know). Then thought it would be cute to take photos of me in it. - That's when the fight started.

To be honest, there's a lot more, but you get the drift. Honestly - I couldn't make this stuff up!:foolish I couldn't do without her, (really).roflmao

The first one is the official current temperature. The second is the thermometer in my dining room. Right now there is an egg on my back sidewalk so I can see if it'll fry. Yeah, I went there. I've always wanted to. LOL

Your lucky yours went off in the garage. I had a can go off in the trunk of my car. The carpet looked wet and at first I thought the trunk had a leak but it did not rain that recently and the carpet was sticky along with a box that looked wet. I could not figure out what it was until I starting pulling junk out of the box and noticed white liquid. Then I say the can of fix a flat and knew what happened. Needless to say, cleaning the carpeting was not that easy.

I feel for you all with the high temperatures. Not easy to cope with when you're not used to it. I've been here a long time, and can't get used to summer. Anything up to about 45-47C, (113-116f) each summer. Anything above 27C, (81f) and I really start to feel the heat, with my blood pressure, etc. Guess I'm in the wrong part of the world to live then, eh.:(
Good luck with your egg, Sgt. Ya should put some bacon and bread next to it! :yum.

So far the hottest temp. in Houston this year has been 105F. If you're lucky, your neighborhood gets an afternoon pop-up thunderstorm that drops the temp. 20 degrees F within just a few minutes.

The egg never fried. :( I left it out there for two hours in full sunlight, and only the bottom of yolk was even a little cooked.

It was SO worth it, though! I have wanted to do that my entire life! LOL

It was exactly 100F when I got home from work at 6:20PM tonight. Poor black puppy-Mimsy was inside the air-conditioned house and still thinks it's too hot. I put new water in the kiddie pool in the backyard for her, and she's much happier now. :)

I am learning that very hot summers are bad for dogs, and I am also learning that dogs happily kill themselves with heat stroke by running with you in the heat, if they think that's what you want them to do. Puppy-Mimsy goes in the pool.

Ug. That's my comment on this entire week.

But when the news got turned on at 5, the time/temp display read: 501105

That wasn't nearly as funny at the time.

It'll be 105 in my neck of the woods today. Speaking of necks..better apply sunblock for this neck. LOL

Was wondering how that worked out.

Weather is of late being a bit funky and USA, CAN in heatwave and thunderstorms and the UK under water, we have been having really bad rain of late, thought I was going to need a snorkel for a work trip I just had to Belfast NI.

I think tips to make us safe are great and personal tips are much better in the main than Gov ones.

Well I love the weather forecasters, day before yesterday the news was splashing about Toronto being soooooo hot, 34C, oh my lord how did they manage?
I live about 2 hours from Toronto, the digital temp/time sign in town read 43C/107F'ish (bare in mind these signs only read air temp) plus humidity. It was mighty warm.
Today they said is cooling down, temps in the normal range.... hmmm, normal?... at 9am the sign read 29C, the forecast said it's currently 21C, this is the problem when you forecast the weather based off one weather station sitting in a wodden box in a field 15 miles away.

So yes, once again we are going to have a blistering day, now 11am and honestly my breathing is laboured due to no air, there's no breeze, just sun and humidity.
If this continues I am going to write a letter of complaint to my local MP and create a petition to get this kind of weather made illegal :-D
I'm English, I was born waterproof, not heatproof :-D Maybe I can get something done about it through the British consulate :-D

87F has been FABULOUS!! Yesterday was pretty brutal, but at least we only had to do five hours. Today and tomorrow I'm working outside doing concerts at our gardens and sculpture park, and the lower temperature combined with the increased breeze has been heavenly. Six hours this morning, and I only went through two bottles of water and one Gatorade. :-D

Triaxx, you made me think of this! LOL

Yup, Meijer Gardens. Yesterday was Brandi Carlile, today is Fiona Apple. They put in a really neat outdoor amphitheatre a few years ago, and it's growing more and more popular by leaps and bounds. I think we have 25 shows this year. :)

Luckily the temp has cooled off a bit, it was ever so hot here with the humidex included it was 44 Celsius a few days ago. Don't like the A/C so much but had no choice in having to turn it on.
