I don't always get extended warranties on things I buy. I go case by case, but with computers, I generally think it's worth it. I paid the price with my laptop when I didn't get the accidental damage insurance that covers spills.

I think warranties are definitely worth it for things for kids.

My sister said a friend of hers always uses this site: SquareTrade

It offers warranties at a lot less then manufacturer price...up to the cost of the item. If it costs more to fix, they will refund the amount of the item.

I've never even seen them on Amazon:

    http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=bl_sr_pc?_encoding=UTF8&node=172282&field-brandtextbin=SquareTrade

They get a ton of good reviews.

Anyone ever use them or hear of anyone else using them?

Might really be worth it for kid's phones since they drop them a lot....also for the laptop I need to get my oldest for school.

I always invest in extended warranties for laptops.
Mainly because they use proprietary parts, and are more difficult to "get at".

Desktops can usually be replaced with standard parts, but not all makes so be careful.

I've been buying warranties thru SquareTrade.com for about a year now. I haven't had to cash in on one yet; however my dad didn't have any problems with them when he sent an item in under their warranty. They also have great reviews on many sites.

Given the number of dropped notebook PCs I get in for repairs at my shop, I feel an accidental damage warranty on a notebook is a "must have" (replacing a screen usually costs $175 - $200; motherboards can be even worse).

SAVINGS ALERT: SquareTrade almost always has some type of discount code worth at least 20% off warranty purchases. For Black Friday, they're offering a 35% discount using a promo code that has yet to be released (I got an e-mail from them telling me to check www.squaretrade.com at Midnight Friday). If you can't find the code, call them at 1-877-WARRANTY - the phone staff is usually very good about sharing the code(s) available on the day you want to purchase the warranty.

The discount codes are only valid for warranty purchases made online at www.squaretrade.com or by phone at 1-877-WARRANTY. SquareTrade warranties purchases through Amazon, Buy.com, etc. do not qualify for the discount. Not sure, but I think this offer is also limited to USA residents only.

The reviews everywhere I looked were overwhelmingly excellent. There's always going to be a few who don't read things or understand what something covers...of course it's not their fault.rolleyes

I learned that one the hard way. I will always get the Accidental Damage now after spilling coffee on my months old laptop and having to replace the mobo along with other components. That was painful.

Yep...my sister gave me the link...good to know on the fact that you have purchase it there.

    Thanks for the input!

Did you get this code? I can't find it anywhere.

    Edited to add:

Nevermind. My sister's friend forwarded me his email with his codes. He's only using one so is giving me the other two to use if I want. I didn't realize they were one time use codes and you only got 3.

If you can't find a 35% code, call the 877-WARRANTY # - SquareTrade usually has a 20% off generic code available that can be used as many times as you want. ;)

    Thanks.:)

My sister's friend came through for me. He gave me two of his, which I used. A pretty good deal. The warranty and accidental damage one I got on my youngest's new itouch was only $35. I bought her the Otterbox case for it and told her to keep it on, but the chances of her screen not breaking at some point are pretty slim as those things are just way too delicate. I thought the $35 was a pretty good price for that.

I got a warranty for the same coverage for my other daughter's new laptop she is getting for xmas.
