I received this email, makes sense to me, think I'll get some :guns

    Subj: Wasp spray

I thought I would pass this on to you girls. It sounds like a good idea.

Just remember that there is probably a safety device on the can or
cap so it does not get sprayed by accident.

Learn how to open it quickly

A receptionist in a church in a high risk area was concerned about someone
coming into the office on Monday to rob them when they were counting the
collection. She asked the local police department about using pepper spray
and they recommended to her that she get a can of wasp spray instead. The
wasp spray, they told her, can shoot up to twenty feet away and is a lot
more accurate, while with the pepper spray they have to get too close to you
and could overpower you. The wasp spray temporarily blinds an attacker until
they get to the hospital for an antidote. She keeps a can on her desk in the
office and it doesn't attract attention from people like a can of pepper
spray would. She also keeps one nearby at home for home protection. You
could also keep it in your car and it would be legal. I Thought this was
interesting and it might be of use to lots of ladies...& gentlemen

Well, WASP spray can be effective against annoying WASPS who want to bring the 'Real life' to you! Just say NO and just tell them you're a heathen!:p;):-D

Wasps, of the insect type, are a vidictive creature. I'd pay for a pro to get them out, seen too many OOPS moments and then see the wannabe exterminators jump in the lake in October!:-D

I have been carrying a travel sized can of hair spray in my purse for the past few years now... perfectly legal, very effective, and very innocent-looking.

I don't need range. I just need something that burns and slows an attacker down... the way I see it, if I let someone come close enough to me that they are able to grab me, the error is on me, and so is the blame. Prevention is worth far more than cure, and that is never more true than with self defense.

I have never had a guy come close enough to grab me... though I have used the hair spray a few times.

It's awful how vulnerable you feel, become when your older. Although there have been plenty attacks on young women, one in the parking lot of Babies R Us while the woman was putting her baby into the car. He kidnapped them both rapped her in the parking lot adjacent to school which caused a lock down. They finally caught him a year and three more woman later.
I am so paranoid putting my groceries in the car when I'm alone, not that they would want anything from me other then my car. It's just plain scary getting old and weak :( oh and slow, forgot that one :(:(

NO,NO,NO terrible advice, you give the attacker the collection then phone the police:confused If I wanted the collection and I'm up against a nice receptionist lady I'm taking that collection,if she gets some wasp spray out and tries to spray me I'm gonna break her face then take the collection.

You should only fight back when its a last resort, when your being violently attacked or worse.

And if it was better than pepper spray police would carry it.

Most of those people are going to hurt you no matter what you do.
The money isn't important true but being kidnapped or having your head bashed in is another story. A good deal of the time they don't want witnesses.

  17. Mimsy

Mimsy Superior Imperial Queen of the MG Games Forum

Exactly. Thank you Rikky for bringing some common sense to the thread :)

If you come to my reception and demand all the money, I'll give you the money. And my wallet, my jewelry, my cell phone if you ask, and all my credit cards. Why not? They're just stuff. They can be replaced. I'm not going to be dumb enough to attack you unless you give me no other choice. You came for the money. The sooner I give it to you, the sooner you'll leave.

If you corner me and start tearing at my blouse, that's when the hair spray at close range comes out. Nails in eyes, teeth on jugular, stiletto heels on your feet, whatever it takes.

But to provoke a robber who didn't intentionally plan a physical attack into attacking, is just plain stupid.

Well I got a can yesterday at the store. What with all the home invasions, car jackings and so much crime in this town, it's my next best defence to a gun.

  19. Triaxx2

You're wrong Rikky. Not fighting back makes you a victim. And victims are what the criminals want. That line of thought is why there are so many more criminals. Because people are unwilling to take initative and fight back. Instead they cower meekly and hope the police arrive in time.

You want my things? Fine, I'm going to make sure that you have to KILL me to get it. Because the average criminal is a coward and does not want to fight. They rely on stealth and intimidation to get results. The police tell you not to fight, give in, give up, surrender. It keeps the cops and the criminals and the therapists in business.

Sounds like there's a personal story behind this. I won't pry, but really...is it worth your life for whatever you happen to be carrying?

Personally, I would rather lose the less than $50 I have on me at most times than my life. If that makes me a victim, I'm good with that. Now, the one time a guy grabbed my arm and tried to drag me behind the dumpsters in a parking lot at night without asking for or reaching for my purse, I fought like a wildcat (I didn't figure he wanted me back there so he could tell me a secret after all). But if someone simply wants to steal my money? Go for it! I don't care when (or if) the police arrive...it's worth losing my money to not get injured or killed fighting.

  22. Mimsy

It only makes you a victim if you let that experience shape your life from then on. If you survive, move on, and don't let it frighten you from doing whatever you want, whenever you want, then it makes you a smart survivor who picks her fights wisely. Which, I might add, is what sets surviving and successful fighters apart from the rest.

We have some wise women in this forum.

If someone threatens your life or well being for monetary gain and you give it to them, you are a survivor, not a victim.

Being a victim is willingly allowing others to take advantage of you or walking all over you in matters that really count. Your money and credit cards just really don't mean much.

  27. Mimsy

Mimsy Superior Imperial Queen of the MG Games Forum

Exactly. I am actually a bit offended that there are people in this world who look at a person (man or woman) who is quick-thinking and level headed enough to realize that and who survive as a result, and label them victims. That's not at all what the word "victim" means.

There are not many incendents where they simply take whatever and run off. If your a man they'll shoot, stab or bludgeon. Women they **** plus stab blah blah.
Especially in your home, your car. You roll over for them and those are the people they find in the woods in shallow graves.

Based on actual crime statistics, attacks 90% of women attacked in their homes are attacked by a family member, so I'm not sure if that is relevant in this case... in abusive relationships, different rules apply.

But lets keep things in context here its a church collection plate with a few dollars in,if your defending your home maybe,I'd fight back.

It all depends upon the situation,if a guy points a gun at you and asks for church collection plate he's pretty desperate I don't think its worth losing your life, even there were a 99% chance you'd win and only a 1% chance of death is it worth the risk for a few dollars?

I've gotta call this Darlene do you have any facts to back it up?I'm almost positive most robberies are non violent they just want your stuff,I'm willing to wager that around 80% of robberies are non violent the only injury being trauma.

If someone breaks into your home knowing your in there your can bet your sweet a-- there is going to be an attack.
You people must live in low crime areas. Home invasions are high here. We have had people ringing our bell late at night more then once by strangers. Women are routinely accosted in parking lots. Right now we have neighbors we keep an eye on.
Being complacent makes you more vulnerable. If it were simply someone asking for something you had sure it's not worth it to resist, sadly that's not the usual if someone breaks into your home or jumps in your car while your in it.

Speaking of home invasions, did you hear about the guy who broke into some college guys garage? The college guy had some people over who all went out to meet the baddie, one of which who had a Samurai sword... When the police got to the house, the baddie had his left hand chopped off and cuts all over his chest. He later died i think before or after the police got there.

How stupid do you have to be to try to break into a house these days? I know if it was my house getting broken in to, id lol at the guy before i showed him how foolish it was to try my house. The band Shinedown, song - 45 comes to mind.

Gruesome but legal. Sad when someone has to die, even if they're up to no good.
When times get tougher people become more desperate. Not all are drug crazed. Some need to feed their family but then they hold up at convenient stores.

This article was a couple days after we had some guy ring our bell 11 at night, I was watching TV Dan was sleeping. I got him up and we watched the guy on a monitor, He was pretty persistent knocking and ringing the bell more the a couple.
He walked away, Dan went back to bed, I was nervous and still watching.
We heard a noise and two dressed in black with hood jumped our fence into the back yard.
Dan yelled and pounded on the window ( amazing it didn't break) They ran off we called the police they brought in K9's but never found anything.
The next day we found out the same thing happened to a neighbor across the street that night, She yelled the kids (teens) are in bed go away, thinking it was kids visiting.
A couple days later this was in the news.

    http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb187/Darlene1029/ScreenHunter_01Sep180856.gif

These same guys invaded about 5 places in a few days.
In addition to this I have video from our security system of two young guys in our yard. I didn't even know until one of them looked at me through the window where I was on the puter.
I couldn't decide which way to run first. Instead I pointed a pellet gun and told them to leave. They did, the ran into each other and ended up jumping the fence in 2 opposite directions. We made a copy for the police but they had on alien masks. I'm sure I posted it here at the time here.

I guess a lot of whether someone chooses to defend themselves or not depends on the 'flight or fight response, which in emergency situation is largely automatic. That will depend on genetic factors and whatever conditioned responses one has to a situation. That said, after the first few seconds of reflex response, then the active thinking kicks in, (or it should).

The reasons why I tend to have a pretty long fuse is partly because of how I am anyway, but also because I spent 51/2 years in the British Special Forces. Any major lapse of temper, no matter how brief could result in serious injury or death of the perpetrator. Since I don't really want to spend the next 5-15 years eating jail food for Manslaughter, it makes little difference as to whether the guy was robbing me or not.

By way of anecdote, the only similar experience I've had was when I first came to Aust. and a group of seven of us were leaving Karate practice, still garbed in our whites. A gang of black guys decided they were going to start something. We basically told them to leave before someone gets hurt. So one stupid punk decides it would be tough and cool to pull out a piddley little pocket knife and start waving it around. A quick crack on wrist with the Nunchaku sent the pocket knife flying and the black dudes running. Ah well, "stupid is as stupid does" as Forrest Gump would say. rolleyes

The bottom line is, the best defence is an alert and a sharp wit, and to keep you head when or if an emergency situation occurs.

Be very careful with the wasp spray indoors. I was airing out the 'computer room' last summer, no screens just two windows open. So obviously I let some critters in. I had about 20 wasps so I grabbed the trusty can of Raid. While dropping the flying vermin from mid air the raid was also 'landing' on items. About a hour later I went back in to sweep up the bodies after it aired out. EVERYWHERE there was holes eaten into anything plastic, not really holes but it had cause depressions in the plastic and in some cases turned it white. TV remote, cd/dvds, mouse, keyboard, etc. Anything that was made of a plastic. There was a few things it didn't hurt. The dvd player faired ok, the front housing must of been made out of a different compound. I am just saying, if it can do this to plastic, what else is it doing?

Wow some scary stuff. I figured it was reading the label, saying test it on exterior surfaces.
I'll be alone for a few days, hopefully no one knows. In fact I went in the back yard and yelled like I was arguing with Dan. So they think he's home or that I'm crazy and stay away for that reason.
If someone was to get into my house I just want enough time to escape.

I was thinking the opposite, that you live in an exceptionally high-crime area, compared to the rest of us.

And I think you're jumping to conclusions when you assume we are complacent... I think of it as having a realistic sense for danger, in tune with where I am. I am not nearly as cautious when I am out in my own backyard after dark, than I was when I was walking alone across campus the year that serial rapist attacked eight women in the course of three months, on that very campus. That year, on campus, I walked with a can of hair spray in one hand and my cell phone in the other. In the safety of my backyard on the other hand, I can take a nap. It's a waste of time and energy to be equally tense everywhere.

Where I live the vast amount of robberies are just robberies, and it is extremely rare that the victim that stayed calm and gave up the cash is injured. The criminals are more interested in getting a head start than in committing a second crime that brings them a much higher penalty than robbing someone does...

That sounds very similar to my old sensei, and that's exactly what he meant. He used to tell us to never start the fight, but if someone else does, make sure we finish it. Stay calm, think, and if the only way out is to fight then so be it. But if that's not the best option available, pick the other one.

I don't know anything about "you people", but I know for a certain fact that my house has already been broken into several times, I have been accosted in a parking lot, and I have had the store where I worked robbed. I work all hours of the day and night, and where I'm forced to park so the people attending the shows I'm working feel safe when they park is in some of the scariest places I've seen (where people are regularly mugged and beaten if they resist...in one case a man was killed for fighting back...those who give up their wallets or purses are left to go on about their business. There have never been any reports of someone giving up their money and still being beaten).

In the case of the store, I gladly handed them what was in the register. Why? Not mine, insurance covers it, I didn't want to die for less than $50, etc., etc., etc. None of the home invasions happened when we were here, so I can't say what I'd have done. The parking lot story I've already told.

And as for the wasp spray, be careful if you're going to keep it in your car as well. Contents under pressure, may explode if heated. ;)

This is very similar to the reports in my city as well. If you give them what you want, they get away from there as soon as possible. If you fight back, they snap. Applying common sense here, it makes sense that the robber in that situation is already so very tense and high strung that the slightest nudge will send them over the edge... personally, I think it would be a stupid thing to do to give them that nudge.

I wasn't planning on putting the spray in my car especially as hot as it get here. I'll most likely even through it away once Dan gets back home.

I do know of someone (2 come to think of it) that did everything they asked and was still hurt.
One in Ventura, the manager came to our shop and sent the employee flowers I think mainly so my daughter would see if he was still alive after being beat in the head with a pipe. We all thought it strange the hospital let him go living in a motel alone.
The other was right up the street from where I live now, it's a seven eleven I think. After giving them all they asked for they shot him, he did survive.
There are mean horrible people out there that don't think twice about taking a life.

Did the "you people" come across rude? That certainly was not my intention.

It's funny because one of my daughters was telling me recently her and her sisters used to make fun of me for saying you people to them. She said it was like they were strangers or something.

In my defense it went something like, are you people out of your minds?
