this might belong in hardware lmao i have a 800series GRAVELY riding tractor and what i beleave happen is the regulator went out on it i was wondering if there is a way to bypass it so the mower will stay running with out it because right now it will just run down the batt. thin die so thats why i think it is the reg. all i need to know is how to bypass and i can handel the rest
and btw i dont know if its a 810 or a 812 and i dont have the money for a new part because it would cost $75http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/eek.gif

You can't just bypass it, as it's a rectifier as well as a regulator, which converts AC current from the starter-generator into DC to feed the battery. Bypassing it would feed AC current straight to the battery, which would wreck it, not charge it.

Just a thought...have you looked into whether there are cheaper replica parts for it rather than the brand specific? Might save you some bucks :)

what i was thinking was make a cable to hook from the batt to the starter so that way i can just disconnect the batt from it and it will stay running because i dont need it to charge the batt is there someway i can do it so the motor will stay running with out the reg?
and lev i did look around the cheapest i could fine was the $75 one

That circuit also feeds the ignition coil. No juice, no spark, no run. Either the battery has to feed the coil (until you suck it dry), or the charging circuit does. No easy way around this one.

(edit) It's running with no battery & no charging?

thanks General Information because of you i now see the spark so to say if i pull a generator off a junked push mower and mount it to feed the ignition coil will that work?

Most push mowers don't have starters, or batteries, or generators. They use a small magneto built into the engine to generate the high voltage spark directly.

Since your schematic does not show a discrete generator, I'm assuming what they're calling a starter is actually a starter/generator. It has two sets of windings; one heavy set for starting purposes, and a lighter set for acting as a generator, as the engines spins the "starter" while it's running. The small wires shown coming out the bottom of the starter should be the generator output. So you've already got a generator. YOU NEED THE RECTIFIER/REGULATOR TO MAKE IT WORK. If I read your latest drawing correctly you've shorted the two wires together that feed the regulator? If so, you may be shorting out the generator windings, and setting yourself up for an even bigger cost, as the starter/generator will be more expensive than the regulator.

They don't put things into something that isn't necessary. Not cost efficient. Bypassing an electrical component is never a good idea. Unless it's just some kind of safety device. Even then, it's not wise.
