I am currently using a netgear wireless-g router WRG614 v7 and a hawking wireless-g network card with an external antenna. I moved my computer to a different room so now it is about 100ft from teh router and it barely gets a signal. I plan to set up a wired connection in a few weeks, but I don't have any money right now, so any suggestions on getting a better connection? I have a 6mbps comcast connection and this computer only gets 100kb/s. one more thing, when I buy network cable does it matter if I use cat5e or cat6? like does the type of cable even matter in a home network? I am buying some generic cable off newegg.

Check the Routers settings and make sure its sending out the strongest signal it can. For example, most of them have it in percentage, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%.

it doesn't have a signal strength setting, I changed the wireless channel, but that didn't really make a difference.

100feet indoor is too much for most Entry Level Wireless Routers.

The best Method to Extend Wireless Coverage depends heavily on the Specific Environment.

Look at these pages they describe most of the options that are within the means of Entry Level users, and choose the one that fits you environment best.

In general, the best Method involves using multiple units connected with wire to the source.

Alternatively, WDS, ( http://www.ezlan.net/Wireless_Modes.html ) system using Hardware of one Brand across the board.

Wired connected Access Point is the best solution since, WDS cuts the "Speed" into half past the WDS unit.
