I think I'll write a small prog-- or maybe find one-- that makes the page refresh every half second. That way every minute it'll count down 120. let's see... 999986000/120.... hm. That'd still take a good number of years. Anyone want to join after I get this working? Maybe I'll set it up on a campus lab with 40 computers in it for a while.

I'm willing to bet that they NEVER get 1,000,000,000 visits. They really should have tried for a more realistic number.

Even supposing the site were to start receiving 100,000 hits per day, it would still take over 27 years for them to reach their target number of visits.

Furthermore, the site doesn't even offer any real content or incentive to come back. People are going to become bored of the novelty aspect of the site rather quickly.

 

Hmm, I should have checked the actual numbers first. Based on the number of visits I saw the site receive in the span of 60 seconds, it looks like the site receives close to 900,000 hits per day. At that rate it would take between 3 and 4 years. However, I still believe that the site will soon be forgotten and that the hits per day will dwindle to well below what they are now.

I guess we'll have to wait and see.

 

You don't necessarily need to come back.. you just need a lot of people to think "ooh, what's this" and click on the link.

And just to clear up before anyone gets annoyed/confused: 1 billion = 10^9, 1 million = 10^6, 1 thousand = 10^3. This is as opposed to the "traditional"/non-english billion being 10^12.

When I went to the site again just now, the total number of visits to the site was 916,979. (The counter displayed 999,083,021.)

This means they couldn't possibly be getting 900,000 hits a day. I should have realized that the number of hits per 60 seconds would fluctuate throughout the day, and not hold steady as is what I assumed.

I am pretty bored, however, so I'll try to post some more accurate numbers later in the week.

 

i wonder what the ultimate goal is for it? wow a billion hits or whatever... so bill gates will give a billion dollars to the starving kiddys in africa or whatever.. now then u would get 900k hits

Allow me to bring this into proper perspective: assuming the count started when you originaly posted this about 18 months ago, the site averages 251,528 hits per month. If you equate that out to 1 billion hits, it will take 3,976 months to hit that figure assuming they continue to average 251,000 hits per month. 3,976 months = a tad over 331 years; only Joan Rivers will be around to see it, should the botox supply last.
