Webcake Virus

While this may be a coincidence a couple of days ago I downloaded Game Booster 3 from this web site. During the process I was told I needed to download 7zip and I did. Game booster was downloaded and extracted, worked fine but my system immediately started acting funny; all kinds of ads were popping up anytime I tried to enter data into required fields on servers like Norton, I was due for renewal soon and my system was running at about half speed. I found an app named Webcake had been downloaded. This is a virus app that attacks your registry and totally screws up IE to the point it stops responding. I, being aware of the software I have loaded checked to see if something was new and there it was, “Webcake”. I went on line and found out that it is a virus app and not easy to remove. Due to the timing of this event I have a suspicion that it somehow loaded with 7zip. Not saying it did but it sure seems so to me because it wasn’t there prior to my download and IE and my system were acting properly just prior to this event. Is it possible that it got into your system somehow and has anyone else run into this?
    Thanks

I have just downloaded and installed the only version of 7zip that we host at the moment which is in beta. It did not install webcake. And I saw no options to include or disinclude it in the installation process. All our hosted downloads are tested.

If you suspect you caught a couple nasties from somewhere then you should be following these instructions:

No, you were not. You might have seen and clicked an ad.

Thats great but the only download I clicked on was for Gamebooster3. I don't know how I got to 7zip. I've used it before and never had an issue with it myself. The post was more of a heads up so someone might look at it, which it appears happened. But if anyone sees this app, Webcakes, it's hard to get ride of. My luck is that I use a software package called "Acronis True Image Home", which has a disk cloning tool.
It does require an exturnal disk (USB) and copies your entire disk including all of your aps etc.. So I did recover everything in about 90 mins.
Thanks for looking at the possability.

Yes we did look at it right away. 7Zip is not required for Game Booster so it would not have been requested by downloading from Major Geeks. Also 7Zip does not have any adware addons.

Actually pretty easy to remove. We remove many of them each day along with dozens of other junkware applications that people install either knowingly or by mistake as a 3rd party addon. You have to read the popup forms during installation of programs to make sure you opt out of the junkware toolbars and other unwanted and unnecessay items that will get installed if you do not uncheck them.
