Webroot in Japanese

My copy of Webroot now appears only with what appear to be Japanese (perhaps Chinese) characters. Pushing the buttons that I think will initiate a scan only brings up a "scan successful" symbol, with more characters.
Any ideas on this? Whatever has happened has also disabled Malbytewares.

    Thanks.

Welcome to the Malware Removal Forum.

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

I ran all the programs, and will attach the logs in this and a followup email. Several bad things were found and (hopefully) elimintated, but Webroot still seems to be in some sort of Asian font.

    Thanks

    Forgot to metion:
    1. the Java update did not work - would not let me delete the old versions.
    2. I could not uninstall the Ask.com toolbar - it said some needed file was missing.
    3. IT could not find msconfig, so I could not run it.

I think I did everything else according to instructions.

Now we need to use ComboFix by sUBs

    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\Users\Saul\AppData\Local\a34il16lybx1y07gkq8ldvho87510rwwg
    C:\Users\Saul\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\a34il16lybx1y07gkq8ldvho87510rwwg
    C:\ProgramData\a34il16lybx1y07gkq8ldvho87510rwwg
    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\7E5A~1

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

I presume Malware Bytes is ok now considering you have supplied a log from it. I really think that it would be a wise idea for you to Uninstall your Webroot software and reinstall it if the above fix has not helped. Let me know what happens. Perhaps you downloaded some sort of Asian font support accidentally in one of your last updates.

To Uninstall Ask Toolbar and old Java:

    Try Revo Uninstaller.
Choose the option on the bottom of the list (#4). Be very careful while deleting the bolded registry items ONLY!! This software will create a system restore point for you as well prior to uninstalling a software program.

What do you mean, can you better explain? I can see that the msconfig file exists. C:\Windows\system32\msconfig.exe So what happens when you try to access System Configuration?

Thanks, I will try the new things. I must say that your Malware instruction information is incredibly helpful. I greatly appreciate the time you guys have spent setting this up.

I did, in fact, delete and reinstall Webroot - the japanese is gone! So I suspect I am ok. I will run for a few days and see.

As for msconfig - when I try to find it, Windows tells me it is not there. Not sure why. But no need to respond, it sounds like I am ok.

    thanks again

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Now copy just the bold text below to notepad (Do not include any space above the word REGEDIT). Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now go to start / run / and type in:
    msconfig

    Does it open now?
