I'm looking for a good, preferably free program to run on my network to log the websites that users visit. I know there is a program but I cannot remember what it is. It was a linux type program run on a machine that logged all network info. If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it.

Is this an enterprise type active directory domain network or just a SOHO?

    It's an AD network.

Im an IT guy who works in a very large AD network. Ill ask my net admin buddies how they do it and what software they use tomorrow and get back with you.
Individually it would be easy, you could run a network monitor (lan monitor). I googled this *active directory internet monitoring* and came up with dozens of great looking programs, non were of the free type though.

I think Microsofts ISA server is your answer. It's obviously fully intergrated in AD and does what you want it to. It specifically is a firewall but can be configured and a makeshift proxy. In other words if your clients browser is set up to auto detect settings, this server acts as sort of a gateway, it gives nice summations of traffic by port if desired and will block sites on the fly. I think its a part of server 2003 or possibly an addon via .msi file. After you install it, it just needs to be turned on and configured.
If this isnt something you were looking for let me know, my co-workers kind of enjoyed that question and were giving me tons of ideas on how to best skin that cat.

Thanks for that reply. So ISA can be configured to log each users internet activity? I didn't know that. Can you be a little more specific as how to configure ISA to do this. I wouldn't have thought it would be that simple based on the prices of some of the other internet monitoring software.

Unfortunately I can't help you with the configuration, Im a network/Cisco guy and not MCSE. Though I did ask a second Admin to get a different opinion and without any prodding he suggested the same solution! He said once configured it can log all websites by user IP, cache websites, act as a firewall and more.
