    Hi,

We've got a Microsoft Windows XP Pro with SP2 and recently it has been starting up really bad. The desktop looks good, except for that it has the same taskbar as the one in Save-Mode.

the computer runs with almost all the properties of safe mode, in normal mode eg. Can't access the internet and can't print. It's not a driver problem as all the drivers are properly installed. I guess there is something wrong in the registry.

*HJT log attached (USB stick works on the computer)

While you wait for analysis by those with that expertise, you can try:
Insert you XP disc in the drive, click Start, then run, and type
    sfc /scannow
    into the little box.
Another box will appear on the desktop, and show a blue progress line (eventually) - keep your finger ready , and click on retry, everytime it asks (can happen many times, and sometimes in quick succession.
It will take up to an hour, but Windows will replace any corrupted files.
When it is finished, se how it goes.
If you do not have Malware, then it could solve it.

Make sure you leave a space between sfc and the forward slash

Hmmm, We don't have any Windows XP Pro. cd's here. only Home edition and Media. they both don't work :(

I have previously downloaded this file that has registry files that are supposed to tweak the registry, this also has an option to change the registry to default. Which I just did. And now I have internet and the drivers back to work!!

But the screen still looks like it does in safe mode. And so do the toolbars in windows etc.

    still some help please.

PS. are there any other logs I need to show the pro's?

Have you tried right click desktop, properties, settings, and check the settings- 1024 x768 usually gives you a good screen.
Otherwise The graphics driver might need updating (or vga on motherboard, depending on your graphics-card/on-board.

Unfortunately, I cannot help on the Malware check, but someone with that knowledge might pick it up here, if you think you have that problem.

    doesn't work..

I'm sure it is a registry error, so if anyone knows of a program that could show the error, please inform me.

I just did a full format and then installed all my essential prog's and then proceeded to do my usual "XP Tweaks" Straight for a screengrab of BlackVipers website. It took a bit but when i completed and reboot i noticed my taskbar was exaxtly as DutchMarco is describing. Maybe a pro can put all the pieces of this jigsaw together. I will also post back if i figure it out first.......Not much chance though! lol.

    Edit::::::

I just went back and found out how to fix it. Well for me anyway.

Follow this::::::Start/Run/services.msc Then browse down to find the "Themes" service. Check across at "Startup Type" collum it should be at Automatic. If not just double-click it and go down to "Startup Type" and select "Automatic" and then hit "Apply" and "OK".

I hope that works for you m8.

    Lol...

I just fixed the problem.. pretty stupid actually
It suddenly popped up in my head that maybe the actual theme of the computer was set to classic windows XP. Which was the problem.. Thanks for all the geeky help :p
