    The other day my computer wouldn't boot up. It would show the Windows XP Home Edition thing as I started it up, then it would go to a blank screen and then display a message saying something along the lines "Due to a power outage or turning your computer off incorrectly, windows has encountered a problem." It said a whole lot more it also gave me the options of going into Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, and Safe Mode with Command Prompt, then under that it said "Or if you don't know what caused this error highlight Start Windows normally. Highlight your choice" I tried to go into safe mode, but it wouldn't let me! The screen would just go blank! I don't know the exact wording, but this has happened 3 times over the past 6 months. When my computer gets fixed, it just happens again a couple months later. I have no idea what's wrong with the thing. So when it happened again I just popped in the Compaq Recovery cd and restored my computer to it's factory settings.

    It was barely "fixed" for two hours being I started getting those stupid Messenger Serivce pop ups. :rolleyes: I thought I stopped it by going into the Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, Administrative Tools, Services, highlighting messenger, and then clicking stop. But somehow it started up again. I turned on my computer today and here it is once again started.

    I keep getting this stupid message saying:
    "ATTENTION! This computer is INFECTED with Spyware! Your system resources are being used for illegal activity like sending SPAM commiting FRAUD and flooding the internet with DoS attacks! Learn how to remove these malicious programs for FREE!"

    Ran ad-aware personal SE and it found 1 Alexa Registry Key, and then 10 Registry Values added by Alexa. Isn't Alexa come bundled with IE?

    Are there any ideas for what I should do? Thanks guysss!

    I just ran Ad-Aware and it showed three instances of Alexa as critical objects. I let it fix it. I would also like to know if that is a problem. I recently updated windows - I wonder if it added it.

    Read this on Alexa: http://www.imilly.com/alexa.htm

    If you believe you have malware problems, follow the below.

    First, please follow ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal
    If you already have any of the programs linked in the tutorial please double check your version to make sure you have the latest one and that you have any/all updates for the programs.

    NOTE: In order to resolve the issues you are having it is very important that you at least try to perform all the steps as outlined. If you have any difficulty please post back letting us know what steps you have completed, what you found while doing the scans if anything and details about any problems you have encountered in completing the steps. The more details you can provide the better.

    After doing ALL of the above if you still have a problem:

    Make sure you have HijackThis 1.99 and follow the guidelines on where to install it and how to post a log as an attachment. This is all covered in the sticky thread NO HIJACK THIS LOG FILES BEFORE READING THIS: HJT Tutorial & LOG File Posting

    Now post a HijackThis log as an attachment to your message (Do not post the log inline). All running programs should be closed, including your web browser, e-mail. Close before running Hijack This!

    To repeat: Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file. Place it in its own folder, for example C:\Program Files\HJT

    Quick question before I go through all the steps, does the Messenger Pop ups mean I have spyware in my computer? And also what do you think happened with my computer not being able to boot up? I feel dumb. ^^;
