weird display

Was having a look at daughter's mate's pc yesterday - phoned & said "Monitor just has grey/blk/wht squares on it". What?!! So I had a look - she said had been working fine before, then next time she turned on, this. She's running Win98, got 128 memory. Don't know other specs - suspect not big hard disk - prob 2 gig or thereabouts. She had broadband installed about 2 wks ago. Checked connections, ok. Borrowed another (newer) monitor, connected it. It just displayed grey screen & said, "Going into off mode" & then went off. No lights on keyboard. Took case off tower - when switched on, fan working, led working. So was wondering if probs with memory? HOWEVER, last night daughter phoned. Her pc is doing exactly the same! Is this a result of this worm/virus thing, do you think? Can't do much without monitor! Any answers out there, please?

 

Have you tried booting in safe mode ? You DO have an anti-virus program installed........right?

 

Weird that the same thing happened your daughter's computer too... otherwise I'd say it was a faulty video card. Sounds weird... either that or it's one hell of a coincidence. Did your daughter and her "mate" exchange anything between computers at all? Maybe it is a virus... I dunno.

I think I was a bit worried about this SoBiG stuff, etc, cos despite all my best efforts with firewalls & anti-virus stuff, I know if either of them have a problem, they'll just take the usual road of homo-not-so- sapiens & hope it'll be all right!
