Weird issue with DVD drive in XP Home

XP Home SP3 - in the screen shot attached below, you can see what's going on . . . the DVDRW drive is coming up as an MMC/SD reader (drive E in the red square). It will not read DVDs, it read a CD once or twice but now doesn't even do that. I swapped out the drive, that made no difference. I removed it from the Device Manager and rebooted; again, no dice. I tried the reg 'hack' at this link and that did nothing. I removed the drive (physically unplugged it from the data cable) and rebooted w/o it being connected, then powered down, reconnected it and booted up - still the same thing. If I hook up a USB DVD drive, it works fine, but comes up as a Compact Flash (drive F in the green box in the screen shot below). But the USB drive reads both CDs and DVDs. I re-installed the chipset drivers, and still no normality with these drives..... any thoughts, ideas, suggestions, links, whatever will be greatly appreciated!
    THANKS!

Well, I just finished a full repair install, the DVD drive reads CDs now, but still doesn't even recognize a DVD when inserted.... and Internet Explorer is kind of screwed up now too. :banghead I think I may just back up the owner's docs, pics, etc and format then reload a clean OS.....

    :confused Wow. No replies? Strange.

Anyway - I ended up replacing the DVDRW with a new SATA DVDRW drive (the original one was an IDE/ATA drive) and the new SATA drive works as it should: it reads and writes and recognizes DVDs, CDs, CDRWs, DVD-DL, etc. It still shows up in My Computer as an MMC/SD device, but at least it works. I know the original IDE/ATA DVDRW drive is NOT faulty 'cuz I installed it in a different PC, and it worked perfectly. Just one of those strange PC things.... if anyone can figure out a way to get the drive to appear in My Computer as a CD/DVD drive instead of an MMC/SD device, PLEASE post!!!
    Thanks!

Both optical drives (the new SATA DVDRW and an IDE/ATA DVDROM that was already installed) are still coming up as erroneous entries . . . screen shot attached . . . they work, but it's driving me nuts!

Have you tried changing the drive letter?
If the computer has some sort of internal card reader, that might have stolen the letters after C and the hidden(?) partition D and is causing the confusion. My built in card reader is currently well-behaved using the letters E anf F with D reserved for my optical drive. However, all bets are off as to what will happen if I need to replace the optical drive.
