    Some computer specs might help.

What OS? Xp Pro, XP Home, ME, whatever.
    How much RAM?
How much free space on your hard drive?
When did you last do a full housekeeping?
    What Firewall, what Anti-virus?
    What versions?
    Are they up to date?

I'll leave it to a Norton expert to help you, re Nortons. Most here steer clear of Norton's stuff. Although I use WinDoctor and Speeddisk on a regular basis.
A suggestion I will make, is to download and try Process Explorer.

I REALY don't recommend this....but, I noticed a decent speed increase with games, when I disable any antivirus/spyware programs before I play any games

Typically, whenever a program/file is accessed, your antispyware and your antivirus program will check it for a virus. So, IF you feel you are VIRUS free, disable them during any game play. Your games should run better/faster.

    Or is this all placebo........

I believe he meant "Have you cleaned out temporary files, cookies, obsolete registry entries, etc?"
CCleaner (aka CrapCleaner): http://majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_d4191.html , CleanCache: http://majorgeeks.com/CleanCache_d4122.html and Steven Gould's Cleanup! http://www.stevengould.org/software/cleanup/ are very good at getting rid of temp files and such.

Lexun RegScrub: http://majorgeeks.com/Lexun_RegScrubXP_d2048.html and TweakNow RegCleaner: http://majorgeeks.com/TweakNow_RegCleaner_d4134.html are two I've used for registry cleaning and they haven't screwed up my registry so far.

Well the best thing usually before running a big game like Doom 3 is to disconnect from the internet and close down all other applications. I don't see any reason why it should be so dangerous to close down anti-virus and firewall, etc. while you are playing a game and not connected to the net. Anyway, there is a handy feature on a nifty little program called 'xp booster' that let's you put on a 'game boost'. It basically cuts back on cosmetic services (like graphics for the desktop) and let's you play at a better quality. You notice the effect immediately as you computer actually speeds up immediately in response. Well that should definitely help. Beware though, it's known that using only on part of this optimization program - the spyware protection or something like that - installs spyware. Only if you use that feature though!

Another good thing with Quake 3 and Doom 3 that I heard recently and surprisingly, is that Defrag is supposed to increase the fps! God knows how that works, but quite a few users swear by it!

Problemswithvaio is talking about problems when playing ONLINE games, not OFFLINE games. Read the original post again. Bazza
PS: Maybe I should read it again, too. He/she does mention Doom3 as well.
    My error. Baz
