Hi all - hope someone out there can help with this one. I have a PS2 keyboard & mouse. All of the suden the keyboard quits working. Well, let me clarify that - it WILL allow me to type in my password into XP upon restarting the computer, after that - no more typing. The mouse still works. I have tried swapping out a new keyboard and get the same results. WinXP password - okay, all else - no dice. The num lock, scroll lock & caps lock keys appear to wrk (they light on & off). The control key works in conjuction with using mouse to delete files (shift key does not). I'm stumped. Anyone had this happen before? What do I do? New PS2 card? New usb card - and new keyboard & mouse? Any help would be appreciated.

What are the specs of your configuration? Namely the Motherboard?

ASUS had a BIOS update that fixed a similar issue like this.

Hi - the Motherboard is a QDI Advance 9 - I checked on their website from my computer at work and it doesnt look like they have updated the BIOS. So - I am stuck. I supposed a bad PS2 port or broken pins are a possiblity - but I dont konw how that would allow me to type in a password in XP, and use the enter button then - but once I am logged in to xp - no more typing. Bizarre.

OKay another update here - I have the box in here at work - hooked up to another keyboard etc - if you hold the key down for approx 3 seconds it will type a character. THe settings in the "keyboard" portion of control panel have all been set to fastest, did nothing to help the problem. Still baffled here.

Can you use the keyboard to get into the BIOS and change settings?

Do you perhaps have an old DOS boot disk so you can test the keyboard at a prompt?

I am thinking this may be a Windows issue, unless the two top suggestions do not work, than it is probably hardware.

Thanks for the suggestions - able to go into BIOS & type and able to go into Win98 boot disc and type fine. Okay so it sounds like a Win issue - what the heck could have changed to bring this on? ANy more knowledge out there?

I suggest reinstalling WinXP. I don't think it is neccessary to reformat or anything drastic, however a reinstall of the Windows folder might be a good idea. Make sure you use the keyboard that you want to keep during the install.

    Good Luck.

Well, I have reinstalled windows xp - and still I am getting the same problem. It's so strange. Has there been a virus out there that does this by any chance? I would think my virus scan would have caught it - but now I am copmletely our of things to try except for the dreaded format - which I really dont know if that will do any more good than reinstalling windows did. Any other widsom out there would be appreciated.

I have a similar problem to a larger degree. I have a asus p4s533-x and have been using the usb ports for as long as i remember. Now i want to install a wireless keyboard and mouse with the infrared that provide two ps2, one for keyboard one for mouse. To attach to the ps2 port on the asus. It could not be done. It does not recognize in windows nor dos. Even not wireless keyboard and mouse are tested to same result. The questions is. Is this a hardware, software or bios problem? Many thanks in advance.
