Weird Problem With System Restore

I installed several Windows updates, then got told in another thread I shouldn't have installed the optional previews, so tried to uninstall them. Couldn't so tried a system restore back to last week. Couldn't. Got this message,

    Capture.PNG

Someone advised me I really should chkdsk so I did. I selected scan and repair, chkdsk got to 100% completion, and the computer restarted perfectly normally with no error messages or warnings. So I attempted system restore again, but this time back to just before I'd downloaded all the Windows updates. System restore worked perfectly fine and all the updates were uninstalled. But then later on, I started having problems with my Dropbox app. Thinking the system restore might have done something, I again attempted a restore back to last week, just like my first attempt. And again, I got the above error message. So what could be wrong? If chkdsk fixed all problems, why can't I restore back to last week? I no longer need to because I managed to get Dropbox working again without a restore. I just would like to know what's wrong with last week's restore point that's preventing restore from working.

There can be a number of reasons "Why?"... among them are
    Anti-virus software interfering
    System Protection settings are corrupt
    System files are corrupt
    Lacking available disc space

I don't really mind so much if my antivirus is interfering, and I have nearly 300GB of free disc space. How do I check the other two?

One possible solution is to run system restore from Safe Mode.

Thanks. I'll try that if the same problem occurs again.

Thanks. I'm confused about the instructions in the second link. They say if I'm on Windows 8.1 I should use the DISM tool before I run SFC. But DISM is for images, isn't it? I don't have a backup image at the moment, and certainly none online. So I don't understand what the phrase "online Windows image" from this link refers to,

NO DISM is not about images as such. BUT read the link again, but this time properly. It only refers to the need for a back up image if Windows Update is BROKEN on your system. It isn't or you wouldn't have been able to carry out all the updates you mention here and your other thread.

The DISM has been running for about a half an hour now. Is that normal? I got a progress update (20%) after about 10 minutes, but none since. The instructions said it may take several minutes but I wasn't expecting it to take this long.

As Max Turner said- Patience. Sometimes it hurts to have to wait , but, these things can take time- sometimes the first 20% appears to be a hang point, then it can finish far quicker than expected. (Same sometimes happens with aa major update)
Just note this from the link

Note Do not close this Command Prompt window until the verification is 100% complete. The scan results will be shown after this process is finished.

Well I just saw the 20 has changed to 40 so maybe it'll be finished in a few minutes or maybe it's gonna take all night. I think I'll go watch some Netflix. I'll let ya know when it's done.

    Bloody hell, it's done already.

"100%. The restore operation completed successfully. The component store corruption was repaired. The operation completed successfully." Gonna start running sfc.exe now.

That is what you have just done -
Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files - Read the page you just used...........o_O:)

  15. Jesse Newell

    Jesse Newell MajorGeek

No, it isn't. The page I just used said, if you're running Windows 8.1 (I am), run the DISM tool PRIOR to running SFC. THAT's what took so long, the DISM tool, NOT SFC. I ran the DISM tool, THEN started SFC.

No integrity violations found. So no need to worry about that anymore.

Now run CCleaner's cleaner AND it's registry tool.

Then, since your system files have been repaired and you have confirmed there are no problems with your hard-drive - create a new restore point (with a description of what you have done); finally use Macrium Reflect to create an updated backup image. *Let it alone now! :)

I went to upgrade CCleaner and discovered there's a free and a paid version. I currently have just the free version. Will that do, or would it be better for my situation to get the paid version?

The free version is all that you need.

One of the options in the custom install is Enable Intelligent Cookie Scan. I'm a bit worried about that. It sounds like it might delete cookies I might want to keep. Should I leave that box checked or not?

I don't use that feature; I prefer instead to run CCleaner>Options>Cookies, then select and move cookies I want into the "Cookies to Keep" pane.
