someone used AIM invader on me

and it crashed my AIM, then i was listening to music for about 10 minutes when my sound mysteriously stopped. i checked and the song was still playing, so i checked a video file and the wouldnt play audio either. i went through the troubleshooter on XP, including all sorts of checks to see whether or not my sound was muted, or if it was turned up high enough, i check that my speakers were plugged in, everything seemed like it should be working. i restarted, still have the problem, then i plugged in my headphones to see if it was a problem with the speakers, i didnt hear anything over the headphones either. i ran ad-aware and that wouldnt let me update the definition files until after i ran it, cleared out some crap frmo there, then ran it again. still no luck with the speakers, i really cant figure this out. maybe its some type of virus? please help, i have a hijackthis log file too in case you want to see that. please help me out here, i cannot live in silence!

    ======
update: i found out that if i check the mute all button, then uncheck it, the sound will usually be restored. sometimes i have to do it a few times. i ran the AIMfix program and it didnt find any AIM viruses. i have attached a HijackThis log file for you to review. thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

Please read the announcement and sticky threads. HJT logs should only be posted when requested and HijackThis must be installed properly.

Why are you running without an antivirus application and without a firewall? This is like swimming in shark infested waters without a steel cage.

    Please run the steps below.

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
Also to get you started and to reduce the size of your HJT log. Do the following:

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem, boot into normal mode and make sure you follow these directions:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

I have a feeling the below maybe part of your problem. Do you recognize this:
    O2 - BHO: Toolbar Helper - {D44BBB61-E17F-4AE6-A502-8D7E0B29E616} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\s1923.dll

    Morning subnormal1,

Thats not a very nice way to start the morning. Chas gave you instructions and asked a couple of questions approx. 24hrs after your original post. With the amount of people he helps on here thats not very long to wait. Everyone that helps on here does it on their on time....they don't get paid. Answer his questions and perform the instructions given and he MIGHT still help you.
    Have a nice day. :D

    Morning to you also sea23usa,
Its only been approx. 6hrs since you posted. What kind of response time are you looking for? Maybe you should bring your problems to someone you can PAY...and see how good of a response you get then. But looking at your old threads I should expect that kind of reply. Jeez some people just don't get it

Your thread was responded to on 6/17/05 at 00:11. It seems to me that you are the one that needs to be doing something. However since you obviously do not know how to follow directions and think that insulting people will help you, I would recommend you go elsewhere to get help.

look im sorry, i was acting like an asshole, im just very very frustrated with this ****ing computer. i have a gig of ram, a pentium 4 2.53 GHz, 100g gi hard drive, 128 meg radeon 9000 AGP, and i cant even type into this little box without my letters showing up on the screen 30 seconds after i have hit the button. i've done everything i can think of to try and fix this, i have reinstalled my sound driver, no help, ran symantec antiviurs, which found a lot of shit, and then deleted all that. im really lost here, and im ready to just smash everything in my house with a hammer. im sure you have all felt this way before as well. i WOULD follow the instructions you gavce me, butright now i dont want to spend 15 minutes scrolling the page down (my computer is hanging really badly, it only works normally for about the first 3 minutes after i reboot, then it starts hanging up, maybe its an issue with the RAM not dumping properly? i really dont know but im getting very angry)

please still try to help me.

    subnormal1,

Sorry to chime in, but you say you don't want to spend "dont want to spend 15 minutes scrolling the page down" but you want Chaslang to spend time helping you solve your problems.

I suggest you take the time to follow the instructions -YOU need to put in the effort also.

Chaslang and others on this board have spend more hours than you can count in helping others fix their problems. Very rarely do they even get a thank you.

Please step back and realize that you need to spend the time to find your problems and allow Chaslang and others to help you.

    Just my $.02

Apology accepted. But are you problems so bad that you cannot run the READ ME FIRST?

Do your problems exist when no connection to the internet exists?
Do they happen if you boot into safe mode?

Here are somethings to look into:

Uninstall Viewpoint Manager unless you really know you use it. 99% of all users never do and do not even know what it is. It is junk from AOL that noone needs. And it is just wasting system resources.

Consider whether you really need the below four items always loading and running at startup. They should not be necessary:
    C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\PDVDServ.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\TPPALDR.EXE
    C:\Program Files\PeerGuardian2\pg2.exe
    C:\Program Files\foobar2000\foobar2000.exe

In my first message I asked you whether you knew what the below is. I suspect it to be a problem that should be fixed.
    O2 - BHO: Toolbar Helper - {D44BBB61-E17F-4AE6-A502-8D7E0B29E616} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\s1923.dll

If you do not know what it is, then have HJT fix that line (but do not click fix with any browsers open). Then you should boot into safe mode and delete the file (only if you are sure you do not need it, otherwise you can just rename it temporarily).

ok. i did allt he steps in your list. here is the new log file:

Edit by chaslang: Inline log attached

also, i got very fed up with this, i downloaded madboot (www.madboot.com) and tried to format the hard drive, but it says i have insufficient memory. i dont understand this because i have a gig of ram. maybe this is my problem? could this be why everything is slowing down and turning into a piece of shit? what about the speakers then? maybe the sound is just lagging behind? when i right click my computer and go to properties, it shows a gig of ram.

i dont think i mentioned this before but my CPU usage keeps going up to 100%, im pretty sure this is the cause of the problem, but i dont know what is causing the CPU usage to go up so much, im not doing anything and it just happens.

I see no evidence of the online scanners being run and please do not post HijackThis logs inline.

You have no visible malware problems that are apparent from a HijackThis log. Only one minor item that you may even have setup:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page_bak = about:blank

You can either try some alternative virus scanners list in the READ ME FIRST but I would recommend that you post your problems in the Hardware Forum as that is what they appear to be. Also, shutoff your PC and remove and then replace your memory devices. You may want to run a memory tester.
