Hey gang. I don't know what happened exactly. But all of a sudden I was prompted with a screen that said windows has found a fatal error, and is shutting down to protect your system. If you havn't seen this message before please restart. Or something basically like that. It came out of nowhere, I was playing solitare. Anyway. Now I can't start my computer in anything but safe mode. No safemode with networking even. I did a system restore, but it will only let me restore it to a week ago, and that doesn't fix the problem. I ran Ccleaner, Spybot s&d, adaware, and windows antispyware. Fixed all that was found. I have no virus scanner as I have 64 bit windows, and there isn't one for it yet. To further describe my problem so that it is fully understood I get to the welcome screen, and I clicked on administrator. It said please enter your password, I did, it asked if I forgot it. No I havn't so I typed it again, still nothing. Started in safe mode, the password worked. Made a new account with no password as an administrator. Restarted same thing, only now the administrator account is gone, but it still asks if I forgot my password. THERE ISN'T ONE THIS TIME. Tried to start it in safemode with networking to post this. same problem. I can get in in safe mode. And my guess is that there is a program that runs on start up that does this. And it's in the registry. Cause it most certainly is not spyware, I'd of zapped it. Any questions I'll answer them as best I can, but this is really wierd. The only thing I can provide right now besides this huge description, is my HJT log and my frustration. Sorry guys. But I know you can help.

If you suspect a startup program try this:

    1. Open msconfig (start --> run "msconfig", enter)
    2. Select the startup tab
    3. Uncheck every item
    4. Enable one item at a time, restarting after each until you find the perpetrator

Bit of a tedious procedure, but that's the way she goes.

Also, maybe you should see this thread. If you have no AV protection, I would be kind of leary of malware.

  3. Hmm is it true though that you can still run a 32 bit app on a 64 bit processor? if it is i would try maybe using a 32bit antivirus as it mostly likely will run because the processor does have backwards capeability. I would imagine you see the same effect when you run a 16 bit dos app on a 32bit processor. But concerning your problem. Have you tried maybe a password reset disk? Make one in safe mode then reboot and run it in normal mode. Then try to log in and set up your account password again.
