Well that was an interesting update

Went to Windows update earlier, had a catastrophic crash.

I mean the only alternative left was a reformat and clean install, just had a call from my son and guess what?

Yep, you guessed it, self same thing.

May be a coincidence folks but I thought I'd give you a heads up just in case.

Praise Microsoft, true friends of Geeks for they give us much practice



Didn't want to post this in software in case it's a one-off, (well two-off), enough panic goes round as is

 

Restarts, click name, loading personal settings, then just background and cursor, very sloooow. Then just sits there.

Reboot in safe mode, same old same old, Last Known Good Configuration, you're kidding right?

Any type of reinstallation procedure short of reformatting gets to setting up networking, 30 mins left and stays there.

Incidentally I had previously had all updates as of a couple of days ago barring the dread one ending 358 (sshhh ).

Still deselected that little beauty.

And there you have it.

Same thing, two different machines, maybe coincidental

But with major updates like that, I'm always happy when I have a fresh image in the Acronis zone... just in case!

 

Worked ok for me, too.

I did have a call yesterday where someone's machine blew up with it though.

There must be some sort of third party software conflicting with it. Thats really the only thing that explains how sporadic it is.

Btw, in regards to last known good...if you have made it past the welcome screen in normal mode, the LKG gets updated and its usefulness gone.
Its usually only useful when a service or driver goes bad and you cannot boot at all, or only to Safe Mode.

Yeah my thoughts too, I'm adding apps one at a time and getting jiggy with it just to see what happens. Probably never find out


Nice tip Adryn, that's in the memory bank, along with other titbits like working around the Access problem in Office '97 and other little goodies you didn't know you needed to know until you knew them, if you see what I mean

Anyway another lesson re-learned , an image that you have not updated regularly is about as much use when your setup starts behaving like a Clown's car, as a chocolate teapot!

everything worked excepte winamp, it crash the three times I tried to start it....since it was just that program, just did the ininstall of winamp, and downloaded the newest........wobbles
