Went to the SPCA, if in fact I do get one I would rather it be a rescue. Have to say though the only thing that caught our eye was a fluffy gray kitten, no didn't get it. Goes to show we have become cat people. Goes with our age I imagine.
I don't know, just not ready for that much of a commitment I guess. Plus we filled the back yard with rock for easy, no make that NO maintenance.
Wow just thought, my last dog was in the 80's. Seemed to loose both dogs and our cat within a matter of a couple years plus my marriage went to hell, could be a factor there some where rolleyes
I'll keep looking. there were a couple Chihuahuas there brother and sister I would guess, they were cute, then there was a big yellow Lab :-D one extreme to the other huh?
When it's right it will happen I suppose.

Keep going back, darlene. One time you do, you'll see one and say he/she's the one I want. :) To be honest, I'm surprised you want a puppy. They are sooo much work compared to a dog that has been trained and is just in there because it's owners can't take car of it anymore.

I really don't mind the work, my health is so much better after the surgery and last visit to the respatory doctor test results comfirmed I don't even need breathing treatments any more. Not throwing it all out until after next flu season tho.
The cats are an issue, I figured a pup would not freak them out as bad also we have the wild cat outside, no telling how she would act, don't want to scare her to run off, had her around 5 years now.

Yep, cats throw a wrench into it, don't they. My cat was so old when we decided to get a dog, that I just waited until she died.

You're right about the puppy being better with the cat, though. I'm sure it's much easy than introducing a grown dog into the house.

That's awesome, btw, about your breathing being so much better!:)

Thank you, it's so hard for me not to preach to the smokers here. Can't imagine how horrible it is until your sick. I was basically an invalid for years, it's truly a miracle, enough of that rolleyes :-D

Yup Laura, last three dogs I had were house trained and rescues. There is no way at my age that I would ever get a puppy. Sure they're cute and all but I'm sure you don't want to fall down while sliding on something and it's a lot of work.

@Darlene Also pick a dog that matches your lifestyle and abilities as many folk get a dog that is totally wrong for them as to exercising needs and care plus personality. I've seen people get malamutes and then find out that they don't have the time or energy to properly take care of the animal. If I remember, you wanted a dog to be an alarm system, most will be good for that. Attack dogs are completely different as to demeanor and training.

LOL Darlene, I guess an energetic Doberman or Greyhound would not be up your alley then. :-D Ya know, that's how many of the dogs end up in shelters even though would be great animals in a different setting.

I had a dober that got so bored that she destroyed my furniture, I can't say that I blame her as I was at work all day. I'm sure you can find a good companion for your needs.:)

Your so right, the last time I had dogs it was rural, did have neighbors but they had lots of space to roam around. I say they cuz a stray showed up once and our dog would not let her leave, so we refered to her as our dog's dog.

Yeah, Darlene. Dogs are like people. They have many different personalities. Some are hyper, some are mellow. The shelter folks may have some idea about the personalities. Some good dogs end up there because of uncaring owners or even owners who get forced into a situation, where they have to give up their pet.
    Good Luck!

I can't go into a shelter because I want them all and it seems like I am a visitor on Death Row. :cry

What a nice thing to do, by going to the SPCA for a dog :)

I hope that you and your new companion find each other soon.

Ya muskie, tell me about it.:( At least a few get a reprieve.:) We had a guy that would shoot them if not picked up within a couple of weeks, the guy was so evil looking that I'm sure he would have shot my mother after a couple of weeks.

Thankfully, he was shut down by concerned citizens speaking up. Sorry for the hijack Darlene.

Sorry to sound like Bob Barker, 'Have Your Pet Spayed or Neutered!':)

I'm not sure what the policies of the SPCA are here. Other places I have lived they had a no kill policy. I heard Kern County puts down over 300 animals daily, mind boggling to say the least.
Another agency here is County run Animal Control. I believe it was them who a whistle blower offed them for drowning animals in the local (drinking) water supply.
Your not hijacking at all augie by saying to spay and neuter pets, it should be in bigger text in fact. We even captured the wild kitty had her spayed the turned he loose again, we have her, she stalks our indoor kitty (her baby) got her once we have to keep a vigil when she goes outside to make sure they are at either side of the house, had some close calls.
Seems like most dogs in this area are pitts, people have them for protection or guards rather then making them part of the family, I could not do that. Suppose we should rethink this dog thing and stick with the security cameras.
