Can anyone tell me the relative security of WEP 128 bit vs. WPA-PSK network encoding? I have installed a new pre-n wireless home network, a replacement for my old 811b system. I have set it up to run WPA. But I have one device, a wireless music box, that is old and will only allow you to set it up as WEP.

I know WPA is newer and supposedly more secure. But how much more? Is the gain in security worth it to give up the old music device? Or can I just drop back to WEP 128 bit for the network.

    Thanks.

Tough call... how sensitive is the information you're sending on your wireless clients?

See this article for a comparison between WPA and WEP.

It is almost all benign. I do some online financial dealings, but I always use the wired component of the network. And I have good firewalls, spyware protection, and antivirus running. Plus I have network access restricted to the MAC addresses of the connected deivces.

WEP is next to nothing in practical terms... so get WPA set up as any bit more clued up teen can crack wep in half an hour
