It's invaluable.

 

I prefer a combination approach myself.

AVG Free Edition, and the paid version of MalwareBytes. The second is not absolutely necessary, but I tend to recommend having the free version as a second look in tandem with whatever AV suite you do choose. Nobody's perfect...
