What am I missing, please?

    Hello,
    I'm not entirely helpless w/this stuff. I just nuked my system. The last time I did this. I had the same problem: no sound (no driver). I think I downloaded a new driver relatively easily last time. I don't see what I'm missing this time. Specs:

    P4 @2.4
    ASUS P4PE
    Intel Brookdale i845PE
    XP Home w/SP3.

    Home-built system. According to EVEREST. I'm missing multimedia driver: Intel 82801DB ICH4-AC'97 Audio Controller [B-0]

    I'm unable to find the driver to download from Intel's site. Any help from the Gurus would be much appreciated.

    Hi

    While Intel make the sound chips controllers they generally are not the drivers you need but ones of Realtek etc and the best place to get these are the maker fo your motherboard as in ASUS in your case.

    But install the Chipset driver HERE first and reboot, then install the Audio driver HERE

    *both of the ones to download should be highlighted in a yellow box.

    Then reboot and test sound.

    Hi Dave,
    Thank You for taking the time. The link for the second download (audio drivers) is for a general search result on Bing. Nothing is highlighted. Before I install the wrong drivers (Plus, who knows what?). Would you please tell me which one.

    I built this system at least seven years ago. That was the only other time I ran into this problem. I didn't think to save the drivers on a disk for later use. I certainly will this time. Many Thanks, oh grand & wise Poo_Bah.

    Oh, comes up for me ok, but here are direct links to both of the servers at ASUS

    Chipset (unzip and then install)
    Audio (unzip then install)

    *just tested both and download ok.


    yeah its one of those things with drivers, dont think you'd need them later on, did the same today with a LAN driver for an older PC of mine, setting up a server and took me 2hrs to find a download for the driver as ASUS doesnt link to the damn motherboard now for the drivers!!!! ahahaha "grand & wise Poo_Bah" never going to live that one down, well have a good eve and New Year.
