I am trying to work out what anti-virus and firewall/internet security programs I should get, I got fedup with Norton's today, I did a fresh format yesterday, was going fine, then this morning I started using winamp, ripping my cd's to make a slew of MP3's, and 3 occasions the PC installantly shutoff and restarted, WinXP Pro SP2 reported a driver conflict, in the results of the MS sending error report and known problems, it also mentioned virus checker, so I instantly removed NIS2004 Pro and NAV2004, reset...

I went back to ripping and playing music, and touch wood, it didn't reset (Like hitting the reset button, XP didnt get to shutdown, the system would just flick off and start at the bios post again)...

So I am giving the norton series a pass from now on, I used to swear on them and recommend Nortons over any other, today made me change my thoughs, but now I need to know whats the best virus checker there is, something that isnt resource hungry like the nortons, something thats straight forward, easy to install, setup and continouse use, and detects as good as norton does...

Yep, search is pretty handy. We've had several of these threads already in the past few months; and one posted in the past few days. :)

    Hi Guys,

Thanks Adryn... I checked it out and decided to go with Avast, just installed and restarted, about to check it out now, cool little icons that spin around too :)

I`ll let you know my thoughts on it later.. now I got to decide on a firewall

AVG free is working great for me now. It`s not a resource hog as norton and mcafee`s are.I switched to AVG from mcafee a few weeks ago and i`m pleasantly surprised that the updates are quite frequent----sometimes updating 3 or more times per week.

(this one can be a little misleading, read how and why they pass/fail antivirus programs first. Next, say you are looking at avast!'s track record, be sure to read any reviews listed for avast!, this will tell you why it passed or failed.)
