i have isofter dvd ripper platinum and when i rip the dvd as avi it comes out bigger than it needs to be (2 GB sometimes up to 3GB i wanted it at atleast 700MB) and there are several parts that become pixelated (squares everywhere) i'm not pirating anykind i just found that ripped dvd videos play smoother then when played from a disk)

is there any good programs that are free if not then tell me what your reccomended setting are for isofter dvd ripper platinum to make the dvd video file come out smaller but keep the quality it had on the disk (i don't have alot of disk space to store all of that)

    thanks

Well, generally, size=quality. A small file will be crappy compared to a large file. Play around with Movie Maker, that will prove it to you. A 2mb slideshow will be grainy and bad, where the same slideshow, taking up 50mb will look good.

alright then i'm not that concerned with size anymore (i don't understand it used to be just 700MB with good quality when i ripped it as an avi it doesn't make sense anymore

i hope it runs in wine, but then again software from digiarity has been known to take a long time to load up when being ran under wine i used that winx psp video converter (which was a good call) and it took a while to load but it came up atleast and worked like it should)

Well, if you're running it in Wine, that may be your problem.

    Which distro?

ubuntu lucid lynx and i just tested it and it runs beautifully in wine (like its psp video converter counterpart) but there are still pixelated areas when i convert it to avi (i'm sure the fact that its being run under wine has nothing to do with it, these kinds of programs act no different then they do in xp, vista (not sure about that one), 7

    Good to hear :)

Check the Ubuntu Software Center for something, perhaps?

i already asked the people over at linuxquestions.org for some software suggestions but none of them worked (i kept on arguing with it trying to make it detect the dvd and trying to find the button that makes it rip) so i just gave up and decided to try running a windows program under wine and if it didn't work out then i just decide to give up completely but this worked for now i keep getting an error prompt when i try to run isofter dvd ripper platinum asking for a missing dll file do you know what to do here, isofter is probiably the best dvd ripping program i have ever used so far

    No problem!
The MFC42.DLL is probably something having to do with the AVI format.

    Hi

mfc42.dll is a Microsoft Foundation Class Library file and basically is the go between for apps written in Visual C++ and if missing copy one from a Windows PC and pop it in the program folder to the app your using in Wine, see if that works.

And I must add, don't download dll's off of the internet. Easy viruses.

I'd post it, but I'm on Ubuntu too.

it won't hurt linux mounts because these kinds of virusesw are not compatible with linux only windows (my first assumption, there are some linux viruses out there but they don't work because linux requires a password for everything, including executing a program and to install a program, the problem with windows is that there is no password required to execute a program in a nutshell windows makes the mistake of making the default user the root user and that is a big problem) mpeg2 is what i am using as the file output but this is for converting to play on my psp/mp3 play etc not for reburning to another dvd no not at all but i do feel that i should watch the movie off of hard drive not disk it runs smoother that way

Attached is a copy of mfc42.dll off my PC, it may help with that error of missing file, but I dont know Wine at all, much prefer to use Virtual PCs over emulatory type app.
