heard term for the first time today, looked it up, but i don't see any diff with any OTHER type of shorts. what is the diff with "gym shorts" or "running shorts", say?

are they just dolphins w/o the indentation?

It's when you have a short between the battery and the starter!! :-D:-D

Hm don't know Maybe I am not thinking the same but they do got shorts called "sharter shorts" with star loco on it. And for me to go running or what not. I wear whatever I want:-D But IMO me being in 20's and went to HS with PE/gym class we had to wear and buy gym shorts which were either grey or dark blues with no logos and what not on it.

As silas said, they are not really a 'type' but rather a brand name. http://www.starter.com/ The name 'starter shorts' is used the same as Q-Tip, Kleenex, etc for shorts. It's a regional thing same as pop/soda, pizza/pie, etc.

    what "region"?

i'm in new england, and i am generally pretty up on new stuff (uggs, AE, AP, etc). guy using it was fellow new englander 2ce my age, so if anything, i wondered if it was maybe an OLDER term.

EDIT: i mean what region is the term used generically in, a la qtip, kleenex, etc. -- not what region is the COMPANY in.

It very well could a older term. I sorta talked/thought/explained wrong, shouldn't of said a regional saying because well I don't know... I have heard people say it in my area (Northern WV) but now thinking it probably is a age thing, like if starter was popular when that person was growing up and it just stuck with them. Like a 3.5" disc is still called a floppy by older people because they remember the 8" and 5 1/4" floppies that were actually floppy, well no that's not right because a 3.5" IS called a floppy disc but I hope you can see what I am trying to say. Mind to keyboard gets garbled at times.

L0L. i assumed floppy was floppy b/c the DISK inside was floppy -- not the case. so even a 3.5 is still, quite literally, a "floppy".

but i know what you mean. words like "oleo" "spa" and "college ice" which have long since disappeared/shifted meanings. not to mention regional variations -- we don't use EITHER "soda" or "pop" in new england for example...up here everything's "tonic"....

back to starter shorts, name brand or no, my image is something to do w TRACK, e.g. "starter gun" and all that. not "starter" as in "first pair" (a la "training bra"), altho that would certainly make sense as well -- are they shorts for teens and adults, or indeed for kids and tweens?
