I am a pensioner and grew up with the music of the 60s Beatles, stones and so on but my real love in music is Country/Bluegrass and as the radio is on here they just played dueling banjos from the film Deliverance and it set me thinking to all the greats from the country world who are no longer with us,John Cash,John Denver,Flats and Scruggs.

I once saw a show on TV where Steve Martin of "inspector Clouseau" fame showed himself to be a mean Banjo player.

I realize it is not to everyone's taste so what do you like?

    Mine evolves.

My goal with music is to never be like my dad who's taste in music got stuck in the time period he grew up in (50s and similar from the 60s).

I love discovering new current bands I like. Typically I prefer Alternative, soft Rock, pop....with some hip hop thrown in.

One thing I have Never been able to listen to without gritting my teeth is classical. I have no idea why, but it grates on me.

I remember that scene from Deliverance (which as a movie pretty much sucked to me LOL) and its pretty amazing.

What I can’t tolerate is hardcore rap or heavy metal/headbanger/screamo type music. Those two types make me just want to rip my ears off! Everything else I can kind of tolerate.

I have a rather eclectic music selection currently but what I listen to really depends on my mood at that moment. I grew up listening to (what's now called) old school R&B. You know when songs actually had lyrics that had meaning? :-D

  4. Caliban

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

My mother was a club singer and my father was a jazz saxophonist of some note. He was also a high school band director, and he made us kids take piano lessons (8 years) and perform in marching bands (I was lucky enough to have been an All-State trumpet player)...

So, I was raised in a musical environment, and the appreciation for good music of any type has traveled with me throughout my life. I like some country, some jazz, some fusion, some classical - but my favorite is rock...

Bill, I understand the thrill of discovering that the very funny Steve Martin is also a very talented musician. Years ago, I happened across a Boston Pops concert featuring Hee-Haw's Roy Clark. He and the Pops proceeded to blow us away for 2 hours with amazingly skillful classical guitar techniques. Awesome, but who woulda thunk it?!

@Bill... Thanks for the Dueling Banjos, I always loved that tune, always fascinated me.

As for my taste in music, I'm one of those people I guess you could say I go song by song, because I'm pretty sure I like several songs from most genre's , excluding most songs not in English.
However I guess I mostly enjoy Rock, classic rock mostly. Skynrd, Guns n Roses, AC/DC etc, but if I like a song, I like a song, doesn't matter what genre it is classified as.
I often get weird looks for singing certain things by various ages of people :-D

Although I'm nearing 50, my musical tastes are all over the place.

If I had to pick an all-time favorite band, it would be a toss-up between Rush, Queen and The Rolling Stones. I also like '80s New Wave (The Smiths, B-52s, etc.), oldies (anyone remember Scott McKenzie's "San Fransisco"?), old school R&B (Four Tops, Ohio Players), jazz, country and even (yes, I'll admit it) disco. :-o

I cannot stand most rap (especially songs that use degrading language such as the "N" word).

I'm also not a big fan of opera - ironic, since I was was picked to host an opera show on the local NPR affiliate while I was in college and did it for over two years. :-D

Gothic instrumentals choirs. Nox Arcana, Nightwish, Within Temptation, Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. [am trying to learn it on piano], some classical.

Love the soundtracks to xbox games but havent got a clue on how to use xbox. I just listen to it when son is playing it lol. Requiem for a dream soundtrack is absolutely brilliant.

If there are any other gothic music lovers here please drop me a line. Nobody at home or in my family have my taste or style so I would love to chat to other lovers of gothic fashions, music and buildings.

Ohhh the Moonlight Sonata is a beautiful piece of music.
So much depth and feeling... creepy as hell too lol

so recently I've been listening to a lot of Billy Talent, some of their new stuff is just ball's out Rock. Also getting into the Black Keys, they kind of remind me of T-Rex in a lot of ways, especially Gold On the Cieling, it's a song my father in law and I sang along to a few months ago on a long drive. He recently passed away so it's kind of special to me.

I don't remember this thread three months ago. Time warp maybe.
I'm pretty diverse with what I like, but no hiphop or country, (do like some songs). Hard or headbanging rock is best for me, and I don't mind a good angry vocal. My theory is, think of what you would listen to if you were 19, and listen to that.:-D
I agree Ned. One of those bands where each album is better than the last.

Lol I love what you said about Moonlight Sonata being creepy. I agree totally. Different people play it in so many different ways. Personally I prefer it when it is played very slowly. I havent heard of Billy Talent or Black Keys so I will have a listen. I like to take an interest in what other people who chat to me listen to.

Hi Bill, I like pretty much all types of music except opera or chamber music. Most of my collection is from the 70s to current although I do have quite a lot from the 50s and 60s. At the moment I am listening to a fairly new Perth band called Tame Impala.
My sister is a musician and mostly plays sax as well as all woodwind so I have been to many jazz and club quartet concerts over the years.
My son plays guitar and he has played rock, country and blues on electric guitar for ten years and after much practice for the last five years he now is also playing fingerstyle accoustic. In fingerstyle he specialises in Chet Atkins, Merle Travis, Tommy Emmanuel, Joe Robinson styles of play and in electric he plays anything from Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Johnson to John Fogerty.

Here is some new Tame Impala

My son plays Royal Flush in his repertoire and here is Joe Robinson who wrote it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfz1ExRk4DI

Four years ago he played S.R.V. by Eric Johnson for his VCE assesment (year 12 High School) and it is still in his repertoire

Recently I went and saw Joe Bonamassa and he was incredible so here is a couple of his songs
