What branch of the military would you choose?

As you all know, my daughter ( the bartender and college student ) has decided she wants to go into the military. She is hoping ( if her medical records will allow it ) to enlist in the Coast Guard. Her next choice would be to go into the Navy as possibly a linguist. Third choice is the Air Force again as a linguist. Either way, she is way above average in any tests she has to take to enlist.

So, considering the state of the world, what branch would you enlist in?

I think the Navy. Honestly because it's a cake walk comparitively, especially if you get carrier duty.

But frankly I already head up the army of Wench, so pulling double duty just sounds like a pain in the ***.

She is considering the Navy if she can't get into the Coast Guard. Her grandfather is a retired Rear Admiral, but she doesn't want to have any favors because of him. She would like to be on a cutter in the Coast Guard ( which apparently can be deployed anywhere in the world ).

It's fun. You don't see most of the combat, and when you do it's coast to target, you get to see the world and other cultures. I'd go, but I'm too old now, have kids, and am too bodily broken to qualify.

Everyone that she runs into is pushing the Coast Guard with the Navy as second choice. She is well qualified education wise and experience too. Her main hurdle is to pass the physical as she has had some female issues. Those issues may keep her out of the C.G. but may not keep her out of the Navy. She should know in a week about that issue.

If you didn't know, the C.G. is working in the Afghanistan region. They are the only branch that is allowed to board ships. And she could carry a weapon!! LOL ( That is so far out of my imagination that it is scary!! )

Being a father, I certainly don't want her becoming an infantryman. We want her safe. Or at least as safe as can be expected when in a military branch. :major

My father used to tell everyone he was in some hardcore branch of the marines, or something, but in reality he was their line cook :p

    to Tim.
I can fully agree about that.
Being a male, I had my mothers blessings when I signed.
    Felt it was only right.

We are kind of hoping for a post doing cryptography.....which gets her a Secret Service type clearance and could be valuable in life after the military.

That when I read the title post was my thoughts exactly, Navy and prehaps intelligence, as linguistics is a big part of that branch (I am speaking in relation to UK forces and security, but no doubt US is similar)

Also does it have to be military, or would she concider the security services? (you do have a few Secret Service, CIA, NSA, FBI etc)

Wish her well in whatever branch she decides on TimW

Wow. Best of luck to her, Tim.

    :)

I think I'd be a Navy Seal. LOL (okay, not really, but I like seeing stories of them in movies)

I was in the Air Force, so I'm a bit prejudiced in wanting to suggest it. ;)
However, it sounds like she is inclined toward a water-based service . . . so out of the two I'd suggest the Coast Guard.

I went through DINFOS training with some Coast Guard personnel at Ft. Benjamin Harrison (service-wide school at an army post in Indianapolis - they were called "Post Coasties" there . . . :-D).

A few were boots, but one was a veteran of the Navy who went into the coast guard. I recall a conversation where he expressed the opinion he preferred the Guard over the Navy. Now, as to exactly why I can't recall . . . that was long, long ago . . . which makes it a useless, anecdotal recommendation, I know.

Less anecdotal is the fact the Coast Guard has become increasingly more technical and its mission more diverse over the years, so it seems logical the types of duty she'd be exposed to on a cutter would be at least as varied, if not more so, then in the Navy. It seems like a Coast Guard cutter would be assigned more volatile, different tasks on a regular basis then say a missile frigate that is part of a carrier battle group . . . and perforce is tied to the carrier's mission.

1968 joined the Royal Marines and in the following years i traveled the world and learned a couple of languages all while being paid.

The military is a fantastic career and if she does get into the Coast guard she will at the cutting edge of the tech world.

I wish her all the luck in her chosen career.

Personally I'd have loved to join the Royal Marines then enter selection for the SAS :-D Don't think they'd take to kindly to a soldier who couldn't shoot someone though, ten years ago no problem, young and stupid 'I'm 30 now' I don't think I could live with myself now though, turned into an old wuss.

Well I'd go with the safest which I think would be the air force, the military coastguard will be getting into knarly action pretty soon with Iran, the Iranians kidnap them and give them goody bags and presents:-D But seriously I think there's more chance of going over board than being taken out by enemy action while operating on the ground.

The Royal marines have their own special services unit it's the SBS special boat squadron it does pretty much the same as SAS but with boats.

A lad I work with joined the Artillery, never really thought before but thats reletively safe, you sit way back and .... do what you do lol, he is enjoying it.

My nephew wants to eventually be in the Riot Squad or the SAS...... I think he's looking for some action lol

Best of luck to her though Tim, it's an awesome career choice :)

One of the benefits of the Coast Guard is that you cross train first. Then choose what you want to do. In the Navy, you have to elect what you want to do and then if you don't like it, too bad. So she has options if it all works out. Plus she at some point wants to become a diver. Lord have mercy on Mom and Dad!!:-D

Amen to that. They grow up so quickly - the first time either of my sons drove a car had me biting my fingernails; let alone something as big as joining the armed forces!

Saw a commercial the other day - a dad was giving a driving lecture to a little girl who appeared to be about five, who was sitting behind the wheel of a car. He finally gave her the keys, and as she prepared to drive away you saw she was actually a teenager.

I guess Mom and Dad will always see their kids as just that . . . kids. I sure miss the days when mo sons sat on my lap as I read them a bedtime story. That really wasn't all that long ago . . . what happened?

Good luck to your daughter, whichever way she goes - sounds like she has an exciting career ahead!

Wow.. that's scary and exciting all at once! I know that I could never join the military but I greatly respect and admire those who have. I wish her (and you, Tim LOL) all the best in whatever she chooses. :)

Indeed! Scary and satisfying at the same time. Wishing the parents and daughter the best of luck.

My grandson took a course to be a cop and we as grandparents (out of worry) didn't like it one bit. Of course we supported him but didn't say that we were worried. After a year he decided it (law) wasn't for him and he's been studying a totally different field and really likes it. (architect)

I've heard less than pleasant things about the Coast Guard, but they're somewhat dated, and probably no longer applicable.

Navy is a great place, since the food is edible, and most of the shooting is done by the infantry. Definitely should consider running radar. Also being a linguist get's her good assignments for AWAC's and other aircontrol positions since she can listen to friendly radio traffic and keep an eye on Navy and Marine birds.
