What causes "gateway timeout?"

I post on a number of these V-Bulletin boards/forums, and even a "compu-retard" like me finds them particularly user-friendly. Usually everything goes smoothly, but today I'm having some problems with the one board/forum - I try to log on to; the green line I'm using HP equipment) at the bottom creeps up about halfway and stops there, and eventually I get the message "Gateway Timeout."

Any explanation for this? Could it be that there's too much traffic at the moment - being a weekend - bearing in mind that this board/forum is in the USA and I'm here in south Africa? However, I log on to this one without any problems, and you good folk are also in the US...

Any rational explanation for this?

If the rest of the Internet works well than the answer is obvious.

Otherwise we need technical data to help.

 

Technical data to help? That sounds rather complicated and I'm not sure whether I'll be able to handle it. Is there perhaps an easy and simple way of rectifying it if it persists?

I don't know why this particular board/forum is giving me grief, whereas the other six (all V-Bulletin!) where I'm registered come up without any hassles when I log into them, including this one of yours.

Ah-well, here's hoping that tomorrow everything will be ok again?

 

Guys, this is getting rather desperate - can anyone come up with a solution for my Error 504 GATEWAY TIMEOUT problem?

As I said before, I have no trouble logging on to any other website/forum, but this particular one continues giving me grief and it's a schlep having to go through a proxy - painfully slow and every now and then I have to delete tons of full-page adverts at the same time which slow it down even more.

probably either the site it self, or the proxy you mentioned is having issuses, not a lot you can do but wai tit out and or find a new proxy if your using one.
