I've just noticed that both my and Lev's responses were removed from this thread? Why?

Since joining, I was under the impression that the Lounge area was a place that members could relax and have fun in. Has this changed?

Nothing I'm all self trained. I don't feel that you need to be certified unless you're after a job that will look good if you have "x" qualification.

Guys, stay on topic or hit the road. That is disrespectful to new members and counter to how we operate. This may be the lounge, but a specific question should be answered without spam. Yes, you can relax and have fun, theres about 40,000 topics for that, why pick one with a legit qiestion. And, no this question can be in this forum.

None, though the US government did pay from the training for several Certs. They just didn't pay for the tests.

No computer related certs, other than school of HK (like Baz). Got drafted into being the "computer guy", mostly interfacing with outside experts and doing routine tasks, at the fairly small company I worked for in 1987 when they bought their first-ever computer system/network, (Unix server and "smart terminals") ended up doing all their computer/network related maintainance up to 2000 when I changed jobs, from switch to PCs & DOS based/Lantastic network, through Win98. All self-taught with a lot of reading and picking "experts" brains to learn.

I'm not certified in anything, and quite frankly I'm not interested in being so. I muddle through by trial and error on whatever I need to use, and have picked up enough knowledge over the years to do what needs to be done.

It's been a good six months since I was in over my head on anything! :D

Wait, no, that's not true. I forgot I'm a certified ETC operator (computer lighting board), and a certified AvoLites operator (computer lighting board for moving lights). :D

I currently dont' have any certs.. not sure whether I'll get any either - never say never though.

I always considered the first thing that a prospective employer would look at is experience. But I guess following experience a good candidate differentiator would be something like certifications.
Maybe when things quieten down a bit I can find the time to do some. Or get work to pay for them?

My background is Software Engineering in a Storage Area Networking (SAN) environment.

A+, Network +, MCP and MCDST. I don't put too much stock into them though, as anyone will tell you, experience and a degree mean much much more to employers- in that order.

My emp pays for everything, so I just figured why not? The only one I actually spent any time studying for was the net+.

I'd like to go for the CCNA, but heres the thing... I could study my ass off for a week straight and probably pass the exams with no problems. BUT, I don't have a whole lot of hands-on "real world" experience with a the newest version of IOS. What good would a cert do me if I couldn't back it up? I can only fake so much!

the newer ios however still is basicly the same as the olders. the commands are all pretty much the same. so once you learn the commands and the configuration of things like irp igrp eirgp and acls and vlans. you will be able to always do them.

I took an 80 hour A+ course back in 2001....poured my heart and saved money on the course thinking with that price, the test was included. Apparently it wasn't and I never could took the test because of money issues, it was 1200 riyals (around 350 bucks) for both hardware and software.

I did get a completion certificat though.:)
